President's Message
For several years the SAL has been on the waiting
list as a non- profit organization to help work the
Stockton Asparagus Festival. This year, due to a
cancellation, SAL has been asked to man the booth
selling margarita glasses. The volunteers are Nancy
Thomas, Aleen Gall, Lois Hulsey, Teresa Hickey, Bob
Hamernik, Shirley Stockstill, Dick Massa, Jean Fontes,
Dawn Custer, Cliff Johnston, Helen Dollahite and Bob
Austin. They will work a total of 57 hours for the
three days. This is a great way to earn money for the
gallery. Thanks to all the members who have
volunteered.
I was not able to attend Egnalya Aznarans Artist of
the Month reception due to a prior committment, but
did show up in time to help clean up. I was informed
that between 25 and 30 people showed up.
The gallery will most likely participate in the
downtown Art Walk in May. The people in charge are
looking for a spot for us to put up a table and some
easels to dis-play artwork.
This is the time of year when many art related events
start to take place in and around Stockton and San
Joaquin County. So get out there and show your
support.
Attention Board members:
The next board meeting will be held on Wednesday, May
7th, at 10 a.m.

Watercolor demonstration by artist Lady Jill
Lady Jill Mueller was born in Los Angeles, California. From an
early age she was influenced by her mother, also an
artist and the art community of Laguna Beach. She took
every art course throughout her early schooling years,
and then went on to major in art at several southern
California colleges. During these years she was
awarded a scholarship to the Laguna Art School.
As she grew up, Jill was always drawn to the
peacefulness of being in nature. Moving away from
southern California in 1971 allowed her to explore the
Sierra Nevada mountains that she grew to love. In 1983
Lady Jill moved from California to the eastern Sierra,
to live in Nevada close to the great, rugged
mountains.
In 1980 she began to teach watercolor both to private
students and during plein air watercolor workshops
throughout the eastern Sierra. In 1993 she had her
first class at Blackcraig Castle in Scotland and has
been teaching there once or twice a summer since.
Annually she teaches in Virginia City, Nevada and Rock
Creek and Hope Valley, California. Occasionally she
offers classes at her studio.
Lady Jills painting philosophy is based on her love
of nature -- being there as one, allowing the world to
go by -- hence she almost never puts people in her
paintings, as she wishes the viewer to be the only one
there. Many of Lady Jills paintings have found
themselves on city home walls. I feel blessed with
the knowledge that so many have my lifes work to
enjoy and pass on to their loved ones.

Woodworker, Cliff Johnston
Artist Statement:
To me, wood is a living media and the more you bring
out the beauty of its grain and colors, you open a
door that can give a person the feeling of peace and
serenity for years to come.
Cliffs interests in woodworking goes back to his
childhood when he would watch his father working with
wood, building cabinets, boats, and turning work on an
old lathe.
Later he helped his father with various projects.
When he and his father built two ski boats, this
locked his interest into wood that would stay
for-ever. Over the last five years, Cliff has begun to
put more time and effort into working with wood as a
fulltime hobby.
A friend in Hawaii allowed Cliff to work in his wood
manufacturing operation during Cliffs visits, which
expanded his knowledge of different wood and his
abilities at turning bowls on the lathe. Working with
exotice woods from Hawaii helped him to understand how
fulfilling turning a block of wood into a brilliant
piece of art work can be.
Working from his garage shop, Cliff has built
projects that range from large pieces of funiture to
jewelry boxes to wood turned works. In September of
2005, Cliff moved into a studio located at 2817
Cherryland Avenue, Suite #2, Stockton. Cliff has
entered several art.shows over the last couple of
years and just recently has taken a first place award
for one of his segmented vessels. Cliffs work is
currently on display at the Stockton Art League, 1902
Pacific Avenue and the Kamaaina Woods Gallery in
Honokaa, Hawaii.

Saturday May 3, 2008
Journey to San Francisco for a two-hour Dashiell
Hammett Tour. Travel with Don Herron over the
fog-shrouded hills stalked by Sam Spade, the
Continental Op, and other hardboiled characters
created by San Franciscos most renowned mystery
writer and noir writer. During this walk youll see
the buildings where Hammett wrote his most famous
stories and the majority of locales from his class
novel, The Maltese Falcon. Shadow Sam Spade in his
quest for the fabulous figurine of a mysterious black
bird.
Enjoy lunch at Johns Grill at 63 Ellis Street. This
landmark restaurant was the setting for "The Maltese
