President's Message
“It is by art man gets nearest to the angels and farthest from the animals. Indeed it is a pregnant thought. Here you have a man with a brush and palette. With a dozen blobs of pigment he makes a certain pattern on one or two square yards of canvas, and something is created which carries its shining message of inspiration not only to all who are living with him on the world, but across hundreds of years to generations unborn. It lights the path and links the thought of one generation with another, and in the realm of price holds its own in intrinsic value with an ingot of gold. Evidently we are in the presence of a mystery which strikes down to the deepest foundations of human genius and of human glory. Ill fares the race which fails to salute the arts with the reverence and delight which are their due.”
Shared by Winston Churchill, who expressed similar sentiments on several occasions, is also attributed, when asked to cut funding to the arts to support the war effort in WWII, by responding "Then what would we be fighting for?"
Indeed, art has the ability to light the path and link on a number of levels!
I welcome you to come visit and see the works of our many talented artists.
- Amy Baskerville

$5.00
Practice Sessions: March 1st, 15th, 22nd, & 29th from 3PM-5PM
$2.00 per session
Open to the Public and SAL members
Basic Concepts of drawing are vital to every visual artistic medium. Therefore, SAL is happy to conduct its monthly drawing class with Raoul Mora. Mora brings his 39 years of experience as artist, teacher, and judge to the Stockton community at the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery.
Students will participate by practicing the basic concepts of contour drawing, sketching, and shading with black and white before going on to colored pencil. All artists should know the basic skills and this is a good place to learn or revisit them. Additionally the class is a great place to work with other artists for inspiration and encouragement. In March, the class will begin to meet every Thursday from 3-5PM. On the 2nd Thursday of each month, the group will have instruction from Raoul More. The additional Thursdays can be used as open studio practice sessions among class members.
Contact Ruth Koon, Thursday Drawing Class Coordinator, at (209) 329-8115 for additional questions.
