Janet Powell Mckee

April Artist of the Month

After retirement of 2009 one of the “bucket list” things I wanted to do is learning how to paint with watercolor. I didn’t get to start painting until June of 2011. I started at the Manteca Senior Center and in September of 2012 I began teaching the class because our instructor moved to Arizona. I totally enjoyed learning along with my fellow painters and started masa workshops, field trips, and a gallery wall at the center. After five years it was time for me to move on from the Center. This year has started a new adventure in watercolor I’m now a part of the Groveland Gallery and will be teaching watercolor at the gallery once a week.
I enjoy painting nostalgia, still life, florals, and animals. I like watercolor because it’s bright, unpredictable, and transparent. My style, I’m told is the American rather than the oriental impressionist style. I know what I like and learn all I can to keep painting. I hope you enjoy the exhibition. -Janet Powell Mckee

The Artist's Reception is April 14th from 4:00PM - 7:00PM.

President's Message
Cosmos, which is currently on display, creates awe in me each time I come in view of it.

This piece is done by member, Yohanna Jessup, who tells us: “It is a part of an emerging series of large scale mixed media works on paper. This unfolding series speaks to the future, to the nobility of the human spirit to overcome challenge, and the broader unity that is in potential behind all. That said, these images are largely of women's heads, and there is an aspect of archetypal beauty, and the rising of the feminine force in the current global scene. While the two previous pieces Levity 1 and Apotheosis, are looking outwards and forwards, Cosmos is a contemplation of the inner cosmic nature of human beings and how we relate to the physical universe.”

Whatever inspires your spirit to soar, however infinitesimal or large, I encourage you to give it good pause. As always, please feel welcome to drop in and be inspired by the many varied works of art on display. - Amy Baskerville

Remembering Dolores Pharr Smith
Aug. 8, 1930 - Mar. 1, 2018

Stockton and the world lost artist Dolores Pharr Smith on Thursday March 1, 2018. Under the nome d'atre "D'Pharr," Dolores was a celebrated painter and art teacher. She received her first formal art training at the age of nine. Quotes of reviews of her work include: "Brilliant brushwork, jewel-like sparkle of color;" "Vigorous and instinctive naturalist;" "One of the multi-talented few, proficient as an artist, and as a teacher and a judge of art exhibitions." Her art hangs in collections in the U.S., Mexico, England, Canada, Chile, Australia, and Sweden.

A past President and Lifetime Member of the Stockton Art League, her one-woman exhibitions included the Haggin Museum and the University of the Pacific. Dolores' family, her brother, two nieces and five nephews will attend a private ceremony near her beloved Jackson, CA, where she will lie next to her husband, her mother and her sister.

A memorial Celebration of her Life will be held at the Stockton Art League and Goodwin Gallery on Pacific Ave., date to be announced.

Youth Art Program

March 31st wrapped up the Stockton Art League Youth Art Program (YAP) with a blast.
The Youth Artists' Reception involved a scavenger hunt, snacks, and raffle prizes for the young artists who just finished a one month intensive with local artist instructors. Family, friends, and community leaders attended the festivities and viewed the finished class projects. Join us again in June for another 4-class session for ages 6-8 and 9-13. Spots are filling up quickly and a wait-list is available.

The program is also seeking class sponsors. $50 sponsors a class and $200 sponsors one month of youth classes.

If you know of someone with a passion for youth art education, please send an email to [email protected] or call (209) 466-6604.

We have seen a wonderful variety of interpretations in a wide range of media.
