Shirley Malone
April Artist of the Month

Long-time Stockton resident Shirley Malone was born and raised in Nebraska and earned a BFA from the University of Nebraska. She lived in New Mexico, New Jersey, and Connecticut before settling in California in 1969.
Earthscapes/Urbanscapes showcases Malone's two favorite subjects: stark natural landscapes and empty cityscapes. The landscapes are sweeping views of scraggly shrubs and arid, undulating earth. An occasional dusty path or road appears. These are humble scenes—no majestic forests or glistening lakes. In Malone's hands, seemingly unremarkable land forms achieve a subtle beauty and rhythm.
The lonely urbanscapes capture the ordered terrain of modern civilization, echoing the approach of painter Charles Sheeler. Devoid of people, these buildings, rooms, porches—even a toll booth—are architectural vestiges of mankind. Like the photographs of fellow Nebraskan Wright Morris, Malone's paintings of deserted structures are quiet but also eerily disquieting in their absence of human life but strong suggestion of human presence.
Malone worked in many media, including watercolor, gouache, pastel, oil, and acrylic. She exhibited her prize-winning work at the Museum of New Mexico, the Montclair Art Museum (NJ), Wesleyan University, the Joslyn Art Museum (NE), and the Haggin Museum (CA), among other venues.
Malone passed away in 2005.

Two Day Workshop with Bobbie Baldwin
Color Mixing & Theory
For Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, & Pastel
April 6 & 7
9am-4pm
Participants will cover the elements of theory relating to mixing color according to how we see (scientifically) using the color wheel, lighting (and shadow) temperature. Participants will learn how color bounces and influences the subject, define the temperature of the color, paint from still life. We will also discuss the elements of shadow, color compliments, color transitions, and color terms.
$175 for Non-Members/ $157.50 for SAL Members

Join Stephen Coyle for this 3 hour workshop of animated painting.
workshop for adults, will have the participants paint an animated painting using only the primary colors along with black and white, this will give the students the opportunity to work on color mixing. The subject matter can be, animals, people or animated scenery. The topics can be adult in nature, controversial even humorous.
Creativity is encouraged, however if they wish to copy an image that is acceptable. This class is great for anyone who wants to learn how to create a painting or if they want to try a different style of art. All skill levels are welcome. Materials are provided.

The session is for 3 hours, and models typically start with short quick poses and finish with longer poses. All artists must sign up in advance and be at least 18 years old. The session fee is $15, and artists must bring their own easel, drawing board, and materials.
Etiquette: Once the session begins, the gallery doors will be locked. Late arrivals are welcome, but they will be allowed access only during a break between poses. There is NO PHOTOGRAPHY OF MODELS allowed. Artists are encouraged to tip models and thank them at the end of the session. Conversations and music must be kept at a low level.

Call for entries to all artists, students and galleries in Stockton and surrounding areas to submit up to four (4) original works each for display and purchase at the Stockton Opera Guild's April 13 fundraiser. There is NO entry fee or commission fee. Please note: If the number of entries exceeds display space, committee reserves the right to reduce the number of entries per artist.
Suggested themes for art works include, but are not limited to, operas, musicals, scenery, costumes, headdresses, scores, instruments, etc. For ideas, books are available at Goodwin

We had our biggest Art Reception attendence to date.

This program is funded in part by a grant sponsored by the Stockton Arts Commission.
Instruction will focus on the basics of drawing, including multiple media studies in value, perspective, composition, contour drawing, positive vs. negative space, and color theory. Students must sign up for the entire series, and the classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. There will be a waiting list in case of cancellations. Scholarships are available.

To provide low cost, high quality art instruction to the youth of Stockton, and to instill in them an appreciation of the arts as an process in all endeavors, and a discovery of the power of creativity.

With the change in Gallery Hours, the required "Exhibiting Member" shifts will be 3.5 hour shifts (11am-2:30pm & 2:30pm-6pm). In addition, the 6 hours per month requirement has been changed to 3.5 hours per month (equal to 1 shift)

Open to the public and SAL members, Basic Concepts of drawing are vital to every visual artistic medium. Mora brings his 39 years of experience as artist, teacher, and judge to the Stockton community at the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery. Students will participate by practicing the basic concepts of contour drawing, sketching, and shading with black and white before going on to colored pencil.

Tuleburg Press is working to build literacy and writing confidence for all ages through book publishing, one-on-one mentoring, community outreach, and writing workshops.
Those activities occur at THE WRITE PLACE, a downtown Stockton creative writing and book arts center. Modeled after 826 Valencia in San Francisco, 916 Ink in Sacramento, and the San Francisco Center for the Book, THE WRITE PLACE teaches writing, bookbinding, and letterpress printing on vintage presses.
We see the center as a walking-distance friendly spot for students enrolled in the many downtown town schools, but it will offer creative writing and book arts workshops for writers of all ages.
Writing groups and book clubs will be able to use the space in the evenings. On weekends THE WRITE PLACE will host author readings and artists who teach paper making, book binding, and paper crafts of many kinds.
