Focal Synthesis: Paintings by Paris / Poems by Ford
The origin of this exhibit began 30 years ago when I discovered the mysterious personage of Weldon Kees. He was a poet: who was called America's greatest unknown poet by Pulitzer-prize winning poet Donald Justice. He was a painter: whose abstract expressionist works were displayed alongside de Kooning, Hofmann and Pollock at the Whitney Museum. He was also a novelist, art critic, jazz composer, filmmaker and author of groundbreaking work in non-verbal communication. And mysterious - because he disappeared; some friends thought into Mexico, others that he made that long leap from the Golden Gate Bridge into the fog of obscurity. Visual art. The written word. Different artistic endeavors, and yet springing from the same well: that of self expression.
That same 30 years ago I met Michael C Ford whose poetry affected me like a ground zero nuclear blast. I first published his chapbook, Cottonwood Tract and later, the Pulitzer-nominated Selected Poems.
Focal Synthesis is a continuation of that collaboration, an exercise in the process of inspiring or being inspired. Every creative effort is influenced by myriad forms of expression: music, language and imagery of all sorts, just to name a few. This exhibit is a product of those influences and offers insight into how the act of creation develops into yet another.

Here we welcome April spring weather and share a quick update.
As the sun comes out so begins a season of activities and events. So far the Gallery we are wrapping up the spring youth classes and looking forward to an outdoor Earth Day event.
At the gallery we have Focal Synthesis: a collaborative show of paintings by Brian Paris and selected poems by Michael C. Ford. This show has much to observe and to come back and discover more.
The gallery itself is a bit brighter due to Kat and I changing all the remaining track lighting to a brighter LED that should last 10,000 hours of art viewing. The large archive of Carl Miller works have also been properly protected with archival sleeves. Soon we will have these works accessible to the public in the Gallery.
SAL received two grants in late March. We received a $3000 grant from the Community of San Joaquin for the youth art program activities to purchases supplies and compensate our excellent instructors and well deserving co-coordinators Mary Little and Bea Flores. We also received a $20,000 from iHub to develop curriculum and host educational classes and mentorship for arts business and arts administrative in Stockton. iHub's mission is to develop new partnerships, stimulate economic development, create new jobs, and nurture entrepreneurship and enterprises dedicated to innovative and emerging technologies in San Joaquin County.

Our teachers and Stockton Art League members will be running a booth celebrating Earth Day. We will be showing our students’ work done during this March set of classes, and we will be providing fun art projects for everyone to create that day.

July Artists of the Month at the Goodwin Gallery
We will be matting and hanging our students’ best work for display during the month of July. As mentioned previously, keep your work in a portfolio, so we can choose the best ones from each student to put up on the wall.
The tentative reception date is July 8 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
We typically serve refreshments, and the reception is open to all.

Stockton Art League will be participating with other nonprofit organizations to raise funds for our many programs and causes. A list of arts related nonprofits will be sent out before April 18 to learn more about these organizations. Together we can do great things in San Joaquin County.

Through My Father’s Eyes: The Filipino American Photographs of Ricardo Ocreto Alvarado is a collection of 50 photographs chosen from more than 3,000 discovered by his daughter, Janet Alvarado after his death. This exhibit offers a rare view into the daily lives of Filipino Americans in the post-World War II era.

Amidst the political and social upheaval at the beginning of the 20th century, German and Austrian artists turned to stark, almost brutal imagery to create a new kind of art. Figural distortion, flattened perspective, and straightforward technique served to express their feelings and thoughts in visual form. Ranging from perceptive self-portraits to biting social critiques, this exhibition explores the subjects and styles of Expressionist artists, including Max Beckmann, Georg Grosz, and Käthe Kollwitz.

Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence

|
American artist Kehinde Wiley’s new body of paintings and sculptures confronts the silence surrounding systemic violence against Black people through the visual language of the fallen figure. It expands on his 2008 series, Down — a group of large-scale portraits of young Black men inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s The Dead Christ in the Tomb (1521–1522). Wiley investigates the iconography of death and sacrifice in Western art, tracing it across religious, mythological, and historical subjects. In An Archaeology of Silence, the senseless deaths of men and women around the world are transformed into a powerful elegy of resistance. The resulting paintings of figures struck down, wounded, or dead, referencing iconic paintings of mythical heroes, martyrs, and saints, offer a haunting meditation on the legacies of colonialism and systemic racism.

Ansel Adams in Our Time

Looking forward and back, this exhibition of more than 100 works by photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams (1902 – 1984) places him in direct conversation with contemporary artists and the photographers who influenced him. Laid out in seven sections tracing Adams’s artistic development, the exhibition features some of his most-loved photographs, including images of Yosemite, San Francisco, and the American Southwest. Adams’s works are shown alongside prints by 19th-century landscape photographers, such as Carleton Watkins and Eadweard Muybridge, as well contemporary artists like Trevor Paglen, Will Wilson, and Catherine Opie. Their work engages anew with the sites and subjects that occupied Adams throughout his life — from national parks to the use and misuse of natural resources. Adams’s legacy continues to inspire and provoke, influencing how we envision the landscape and serving as an urgent call to preserve our environment.

Churches, coastlines, gardens, royal palaces, dancing — vibrant works by John Singer Sargent (1856 – 1925) immerse you in the rich culture of Spain. This exhibition, in its exclusive West coast stop, is the first to explore the influence of Spanish culture on Sargent’s dynamic visual practice. Celebrated as the society portraitist of his era, Sargent influenced a generation of American painters. His captivation with Spain, which developed over the course of seven visits taken from 1879 to 1912, resulted in a remarkable body of work. The exhibition presents an array of Sargent’s dazzling oils, watercolors, and drawings, along with never-before-exhibited photographs, showcasing Spain’s people, architecture, and magnificent urban and rural landscapes.
