The students of the Youth Art Program were honored at a reception on July 29.
Many thanks go to all the parents, students, instructors, board members and Stockton Art League members who attended the event and made it a huge success with a lot of energy and happy faces. The food was great, the students had an opportunity to discuss their work and what they learned from their classes, the artwork itself was hung with care and precision, and each student received two prizes.

August is here along with symmetry and chaos. As we approach the turn into the second half of the year is great to reflect on the work and bounty of what we've created this year. The rush to start the year is now a settling into 2023. We've trialed through 100F+ summer weather and overcome a deluge of winter. We can now reap some of the harvest. I think these cherry tomatoes would make a fun Gelli plate print or acrylic abstract. The seasonality can be great inspiration for the next artwork.
I hope you enjoy the yART sale of art supplies, furniture, and frames at the gallery this month. It a great way to place resources into artists and art educators hands.
We have several workshops scheduled for this fall. You won't want to miss those plus we have a few more to announce before the holidays.
Enjoy some ice cream and maybe a favorite fruit pie while you can. It will be hot chocolate weather before we know it.

Join us for "The Artist's Way," a 12-week creativity workshop facilitated by Anne McCaughey (Annie Mack), an artist and published author. This workshop is open to all adults (minimum age 18) who are interested in exploring and enhancing their creative abilities across various disciplines such as visual arts, writing, performance art, and more.
Throughout the workshop, we will delve into a range of techniques designed to help you effectively manage your time, resources, and develop productive habits that align with your creative vision and talents. Anne McCaughey, who has personally benefited from implementing the techniques and suggestions from "The Artist's Way," will guide you through this transformative journey.
Activities in the workshop may include, but are not limited to:
- Engaging group discussions
- Assignments from the textbook
- Individual writing practice
- Small artsy projects like collages, sketches, origami, etc.
- Observation walks
- Short inspiring videos
- Music clips
- Various other activities aimed at sparking creativity
To fully participate and make the most of this workshop, you will be assigned regular tasks to practice at home, as well as brief readings from the textbook before each session to prepare for group discussions and respect everyone's time commitments.

Scratchboard Workshop with Caroline Henry at the Goodwin Gallery for all levels. Finish the afternoon with two scratchboard drawings and an abundance of knowledge about the scratchboard process.
Schedule:
Part I (90mins) 10am-11:30am
- Create an animal portrait from a traced photo. 5x5 square. Students may bring a photo of a pet or wild animal or use an animal photo from my collection.
11:30am Break for Lunch
- Bring your lunch or explore the many food options on the Miracle Mile.
Part II (90mins) 12:30pm - 2:00pm
- Create a Still Life from a small still life setup
- Skills taught: how to use various scratch board tools. use of white carbon paper and with scratchboard, types of scratchboard surfaces, showing fur or feathers, deciding on and creative backgrounds, techniques such as cross-hatching that are the same in ink drawing and scratchboard, creating your own drawing directly on scratchboard as a step beyond tracing a photo or drawing. 5x5 Square

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT | Museum Store Assistant Manager
The newly created Museum Store Assistant Manager position will support the Store Manager in all aspects of Museum Store business looking towards becoming the Store Manager.
The managers are responsible for day-to-day operations including business management, reporting, buying and ordering, merchandising and pricing, inventory management, product display and floor layout and profitability analyses. The managers also recruit all the museum store volunteers and supervise the store staff. They also function as the Museum Store Volunteer Auxiliary liaison.
• 32 Hours (Wednesday – Saturday), per

A CAST OF BLUES

Blues music was born in Mississippi, came of age in Chicago, and went on to inspire generations of rock and rollers, ranging from the British invasion of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to contemporary groups, such as The Black Keys. As one of America’s contributions to the world of music, the blues took root in the fertile soil of the Mississippi Delta, a flood plain covering 7,000 square miles between the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers. Early blues greats in the Delta pioneered the strong rhythmic style of music, accenting the raw emotions of the lyrics by squeezing chords out of a guitar with a bottleneck or metal slide.
A celebration of Mississippi’s rich musical heritage, The exhibition A Cast of Blues features 15 resin-cast masks of blues legends created by artist Sharon McConnell-Dickerson, as well as 15 color photographs of performers and of juke joints by acclaimed photographer Ken Murphy. Now visitors to the Haggin Museum can experience the exhibition, A Cast of Blues, opening June 15, 2023.

HANDSTITCHED WORLDS: THE CARTOGRAPHY OF QUILTS

Like many objects rooted in the everyday, quilts have the capacity to communicate stories about the context in which they were made and used. They represent maps of the quilters’ lives—living records of cultural traditions, rites of passage, relationships, political and spiritual beliefs, landmark events, and future aspirations. In the same way, a map is a pocket-sized abstraction of the world beyond what can be seen; in a quilt, a maker’s choice of fabric and design reveals insights into the topography of her world and place within it.
Handstitched Worlds: The Cartography of Quilts invites viewers to read quilts as maps, tracing the paths of individual stories and experiences that illuminate larger historic events and cultural trends. Spanning the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries, the exhibition brings together 18 quilts from the collection of the American Folk Art Museum, New York, representing a range of materials, motifs, and techniques—from traditional early American quilts to more contemporary sculptural assemblage. The quilts in Handstitched Worlds show us how this too-often overlooked medium balances creativity with tradition, individuality with collective zeitgeist.

CATALYST UNCONVENTIONAL ART SHOW

Welcome to our very first, Call for Artists for this years CUAS! We have been wanting to host an unconventional art show for some time now, and finally, here we are! What do we mean by unconventional? Well, the best way to explain it is that for this show we are eliminating all traditional surfaces known to artists. This means, no forms of traditional art paper, canvas, or panel boards. What this leaves, is up to your imagination. We want to put together an exhibit that is not only different, but also challenges you, the artist, to create on something unconventional. With your participation, we can create an exhibit of extremely unique pieces for the community and collectors to see, experience, and purchase.

This show will get high visibility as it will also be exhibited and open to the public during our business districts popular, National Night Out street closure celebration, which occurs annually and always draws a huge crowd. This years, National Night Out celebration will occur on Aug 1, 2023.

Seeds: Nature's Artful Engineering
August 4 – October 15, 2023
Seeds: Nature’s Artful Engineering is an exhibit vividly portraying the incredible diversity, ingenuity and beauty of seed dispersal mechanism of plants native to California. Seeds and their dispersal mechanisms are one of the final stages in the evolutionary biology of flowering plants. Against many, many odds they are the final step in ensuring the survival of plant life. The exhibit is based around 30 + high-resolution, close up photographs of the seed structures and dispersal mechanisms of California native plants taken in the wild and in garden settings by Northern California plantspeople and naturalists, John Whittlesey and Jennifer Jewell.
Seeds aims to increase awareness and appreciation of the beauty, diversity, ingenuity and critical importance of seeds and their dispersal mechanisms in California native plants. Through large, detailed photographs and supplemental materials, this exhibit introduces viewers to a wide range of seed dispersal mechanisms and their valuable roles in the environment, ensuring species survival, diversity, and seed banks for the future.

n reaction to the widespread pursuit of Abstract Expressionism in the late 1940s and early 1950s, several avant-garde artists in the San Francisco Bay Area began to reengage with the visible world, applying the gestural style of action painting to depictions of people, landscapes, and still lifes.

Amidst the political and social upheaval at the beginning of the 20th century, German and Austrian artists turned to stark, almost brutal imagery to create a new kind of art. Figural distortion, flattened perspective, and straightforward technique served to express their feelings and thoughts in visual form. Ranging from perceptive self-portraits to biting social critiques, this exhibition explores the subjects and styles of Expressionist artists, including Max Beckmann, Georg Grosz, and Käthe Kollwitz.

Estampas de la Raza, drawn from the collection of the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, showcases contemporary screenprints and lithographs by Chicanx and Latinx artists living and working in the United States. Gifted to the McNay by San Antonio-based collectors Harriett and Ricardo Romo, the exhibition focuses on themes of identity, memory, and struggle, while celebrating Latinx culture and the collaboration and creativity coming out of print workshops in Texas and California. The exhibition also highlights the important role prints played in the Chicano art movement, and will feature work from the Crocker Art Museum’s permanent collection by members of the Sacramento-based Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF).

Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence

American artist Kehinde Wiley’s new body of paintings and sculptures confronts the silence surrounding systemic violence against Black people through the visual language of the fallen figure. It expands on his 2008 series, Down — a group of large-scale portraits of young Black men inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s The Dead Christ in the Tomb (1521–1522). Wiley investigates the iconography of death and sacrifice in Western art, tracing it across religious, mythological, and historical subjects. In An Archaeology of Silence, the senseless deaths of men and women around the world are transformed into a powerful elegy of resistance. The resulting paintings of figures struck down, wounded, or dead, referencing iconic paintings of mythical heroes, martyrs, and saints, offer a haunting meditation on the legacies of colonialism and systemic racism.

Ansel Adams in Our Time

Looking forward and back, this exhibition of more than 100 works by photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams (1902 – 1984) places him in direct conversation with contemporary artists and the photographers who influenced him. Laid out in seven sections tracing Adams’s artistic development, the exhibition features some of his most-loved photographs, including images of Yosemite, San Francisco, and the American Southwest. Adams’s works are shown alongside prints by 19th-century landscape photographers, such as Carleton Watkins and Eadweard Muybridge, as well contemporary artists like Trevor Paglen, Will Wilson, and Catherine Opie. Their work engages anew with the sites and subjects that occupied Adams throughout his life — from national parks to the use and misuse of natural resources. Adams’s legacy continues to inspire and provoke, influencing how we envision the landscape and serving as an urgent call to preserve our environment.

Our 49th season will include our famous ArtLaunch event, to kick-off the SFOS Exhibition at the SOMArts Cultural Center. We scheduled one full weekend dedicated to experiencing the expansive show with 300+ artworks from Oct 20-Oct 22! The following 4 weekends will be artist-hosted studio events delineated by regions below. Mark your calendars to save the above dates in support of local art and artists.
