Brenda Edens began on her journey as an artist around 1985 in Stockton, California, where she began taking art classes with Charlotte Hietman, a local artist who had the privilege of painting alongside the renowned artist Roberto Lupetti of Carmel, California. Brenda has always harbored a dream of capturing the beauty of scenes that surrounded her through portraiture.
Until her encounter with Charlotte, this dream had remained distant and unfathomed. The possibility of becoming an artist had never crossed Brenda's mind until Charlotte's encouragement ignited her passion for painting.
In 1987, Brenda relocated to the captivating Golden Hills of Sonora, California. There, she continued to nurture her artistic skills independently while also participating in additional classes offered by local artists. She proudly holds membership in both the Mother Lode Art Association and the Stockton Art League. Brenda's artistic pieces have graced Art Shows and various Galleries across Stanislaus County, Tuolumne County, and San Joaquin County.
During her tenure in Sonora, Brenda found herself being approached by individuals keen on learning her artistic techniques. This inspired her to initiate art classes in 1993. In 1996, Brenda opened her own Art Gallery in the picturesque town of Jamestown, California.
She returned to Stockton, California in 2001, where she continued her teaching endeavors at Michaels Arts and Crafts. Enthusiasts of Brenda's Fine Art can explore and acquire her works at the Elsie Mae Goodwin Gallery, located on the Miracle Mile in Stockton, California.

August has come to a close. We start the month of September featuring the artwork fo Brenda Edens' beautiful paintings. We also have a few workshops coming up with Caroline Henry, Andrea Morris, and Theresa Bayaca.
September brings Art Break Day, an event inspired by the belief that a healthy, vibrant, and well balanced society is one in which everyone regularly participates in the arts. We created Art Break Day to make art accessible to a wider audience and to connect communities through art. Art Break Day is about everyone. So this Friday, take a moment for you, maybe even grab a friend and create something together. Joy Neas and Frank Neas have helped organize over 11 Art Break Days over the years in Stockton. Sept 1 will be at Troke Library 10am - 5pm FREE and Open to Everyone.

Scratchboard Workshop with Caroline Henry at the Goodwin Gallery for all levels. Finish the afternoon with two scratchboard drawings and an abundance of knowledge about the scratchboard process.
Schedule:
Part I (90mins) 10am-11:30am
- Create an animal portrait from a traced photo. 5x5 square. Students may bring a photo of a pet or wild animal or use an animal photo from my collection.
11:30am Break for Lunch
- Bring your lunch or explore the many food options on the Miracle Mile.
Part II (90mins) 12:30pm - 2:00pm
- Create a Still Life from a small still life setup
- Skills taught: how to use various scratch board tools. use of white carbon paper and with scratchboard, types of scratchboard surfaces, showing fur or feathers, deciding on and creative backgrounds, techniques such as cross-hatching that are the same in ink drawing and scratchboard, creating your own drawing directly on scratchboard as a step beyond tracing a photo or drawing. 5x5 Square

Artist Bio:
In her decades-spanning practice, Andrea Morris has explored wildlife and the human form through different material and mediums. Self-taught, she has explored and refined her style of portraying her subjects in a colorful and contemporary way. Andrea has been teaching advanced levels of painting in watercolor, oils, acrylics, pastels, mixed media and drawing for more than ten years. Her work has been displayed and exhibited in many art venues in California.
Andrea’s greatest joy has been in sharing her knowledge and love of art with fellow artists and documenting her journey of discovery and fascination in artistic expression.

Tye Dye Workshop with Theresa Bayaca

This is an introduction to tie dye and fiber art. It will provide experience with fabric and natural fiber. Each artist will create an original tie dye design on a silk chiffon scarf.

We'll share stories of these victims -- whether killed, injured physically or emotionally, lost a loved one, or traumatized by the culture of fear created by so much recent gun violence. Bring your stories. All materials will be provided.
Soul Boxes will be displayed at local events to remind the community of the scope of damage done by gun violence.

The newly created Museum Store Assistant Manager position will support the Store Manager in all aspects of Museum Store business looking towards becoming the Store Manager.
The managers are responsible for day-to-day operations including business management, reporting, buying and ordering, merchandising and pricing, inventory management, product display and floor layout and profitability analyses. The managers also recruit all the museum store volunteers and supervise the store staff. They also function as the Museum Store Volunteer Auxiliary liaison.

The Pastel Society of the West Coast is returning to the Haggin Museum for its 37th Annual Pastels USA: 99 Voices in Pastel international juried exhibition. The show opens on August 31 and runs through October 29, 2023. An estimated $12,000 will be awarded among three categories: Modern and Experimental, Contemporary Realism, and Contemporary Impressionism. This highly competitive show attracts internationally known pastel artists, resulting in a stunning collection of award-winning art.
This year’s jurors include Mary Platt, Executive Director of the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University; Marcia Holmes, PSA Master & IAPS Eminent-MC; Tony Allain, Pastel Society UK & Royal Society of Marine Artist, UK, Eminent Pastelist & Member Circle IAPS; Cuong Nguyen, PSA Master Pastelist, Master Circle IAPS, and Distinguished Pastelist PSWC.

CATALYST UNCONVENTIONAL ART SHOW

Welcome to our very first, Call for Artists for this years CUAS! We have been wanting to host an unconventional art show for some time now, and finally, here we are! What do we mean by unconventional? Well, the best way to explain it is that for this show we are eliminating all traditional surfaces known to artists. This means, no forms of traditional art paper, canvas, or panel boards. What this leaves, is up to your imagination. We want to put together an exhibit that is not only different, but also challenges you, the artist, to create on something unconventional. With your participation, we can create an exhibit of extremely unique pieces for the community and collectors to see, experience, and purchase.
Two month exhibit, from August to September 2023.
This show will get high visibility as it will also be exhibited and open to the public during our business districts popular, National Night Out street closure celebration, which occurs annually and always draws a huge crowd. This years, National Night Out celebration will occur on Aug 1, 2023.

Seeds: Nature's Artful Engineering
August 4 – October 15, 2023
Seeds: Nature’s Artful Engineering is an exhibit vividly portraying the incredible diversity, ingenuity and beauty of seed dispersal mechanism of plants native to California. Seeds and their dispersal mechanisms are one of the final stages in the evolutionary biology of flowering plants. Against many, many odds they are the final step in ensuring the survival of plant life. The exhibit is based around 30 + high-resolution, close up photographs of the seed structures and dispersal mechanisms of California native plants taken in the wild and in garden settings by Northern California plantspeople and naturalists, John Whittlesey and Jennifer Jewell.
Seeds aims to increase awareness and appreciation of the beauty, diversity, ingenuity and critical importance of seeds and their dispersal mechanisms in California native plants. Through large, detailed photographs and supplemental materials, this exhibit introduces viewers to a wide range of seed dispersal mechanisms and their valuable roles in the environment, ensuring species survival, diversity, and seed banks for the future.

Estampas de la Raza, drawn from the collection of the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, showcases contemporary screenprints and lithographs by Chicanx and Latinx artists living and working in the United States. Gifted to the McNay by San Antonio-based collectors Harriett and Ricardo Romo, the exhibition focuses on themes of identity, memory, and struggle, while celebrating Latinx culture and the collaboration and creativity coming out of print workshops in Texas and California. The exhibition also highlights the important role prints played in the Chicano art movement, and will feature work from the Crocker Art Museum’s permanent collection by members of the Sacramento-based Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF).

Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence

American artist Kehinde Wiley’s new body of paintings and sculptures confronts the silence surrounding systemic violence against Black people through the visual language of the fallen figure. It expands on his 2008 series, Down — a group of large-scale portraits of young Black men inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s The Dead Christ in the Tomb (1521–1522). Wiley investigates the iconography of death and sacrifice in Western art, tracing it across religious, mythological, and historical subjects. In An Archaeology of Silence, the senseless deaths of men and women around the world are transformed into a powerful elegy of resistance. The resulting paintings of figures struck down, wounded, or dead, referencing iconic paintings of mythical heroes, martyrs, and saints, offer a haunting meditation on the legacies of colonialism and systemic racism.

We scheduled one full weekend dedicated to experiencing the expansive show with 300+ artworks from Oct 20-Oct 22!
