I was raised in Ione, California. What a great place to be brought up in with all the beauty and country side. I can remember drawing as soon as I had a pencil or whatever medium there was I could get my hands on. Always horses horses!
We lived in Plymouth first on my grandparents ranch and remember the beauty even as a small child enjoying the beauty around me.
I have always had this little burning flame in me for little houses with a light in a window. I always remember riding my horse on the Old Stockton Road heading home where we lived on the Five Mile Drive. There was a little farm house that sat all alone back off the road near the creek. I can remember the little White House with lights glowing warmly. I believe in my heart this is where that flame got ignited that drives me today with loving that darling little houses with lights in the windows.
We grew up in the best of times in my humble opinion. After WWII everyone was having families and everything was looking wonderful and it was great times. So growing up in a little town and riding horses everyday with a lot of friends we build memories and feel good good times that stay with you for a lifetime. What I am trying to express is this is a driving force for my art.
I attended classes at Delta College and studied more with the private established artist. My main teacher was Anita Wolff. She was wonderful and taught me so much. I worked with Donald Putman too. From them I learned how to paint. But I believe you have to have feelings to create art.
We were in New Orleans when I discovered James Michalopoulos. This man did it his way and it showed!! That day I changed….”paint from your heart”. It will never let you down. I discovered I paint from the good feelings of my wonderful childhood. The fun I had and the joy in my heart shows in some of my work. It is me and I just paint what makes me feel good. No more no less. Paint from your heart….other people will feel the joy too.

Cool days and warm days again... It sounds like October in California
We kick of the month with the magical paintings of Loretta Armstrong now on display at the Goodwin Gallery. It is also a great time to find new passion and processes to add to the studio as we prepare for a wet California winter. We have some workshops starting with Andrea Morris and October once again welcome the opportunity for youth art classes. Towards the end of the month we will have the annual Membership meeting and we hope all of you will join up for a couple of hours of visiting and planning for the new year.

Artist Bio:
In her decades-spanning practice, Andrea Morris has explored wildlife and the human form through different material and mediums. Self-taught, she has explored and refined her style of portraying her subjects in a colorful and contemporary way. Andrea has been teaching advanced levels of painting in watercolor, oils, acrylics, pastels, mixed media and drawing for more than ten years. Her work has been displayed and exhibited in many art venues in California.
Andrea’s greatest joy has been in sharing her knowledge and love of art with fellow artists and documenting her journey of discovery and fascination in artistic expression.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT | Museum Store Assistant Manager
The newly created Museum Store Assistant Manager position will support the Store Manager in all aspects of Museum Store business looking towards becoming the Store Manager.
The managers are responsible for day-to-day operations including business management, reporting, buying and ordering, merchandising and pricing, inventory management, product display and floor layout and profitability analyses. The managers also recruit all the museum store volunteers and supervise the store staff. They also function as the Museum Store Volunteer Auxiliary liaison.
• 32 Hours (Wednesday – Saturday), per

• Salary Range: $18 - $20 per hour (32-hour

The Pastel Society of the West Coast is returning to the Haggin Museum for its 37th Annual Pastels USA: 99 Voices in Pastel international juried exhibition. The show opens on August 31 and runs through October 29, 2023. An estimated $12,000 will be awarded among three categories: Modern and Experimental, Contemporary Realism, and Contemporary Impressionism. This highly competitive show attracts internationally known pastel artists, resulting in a stunning collection of award-winning art.
This year’s jurors include Mary Platt, Executive Director of the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University; Marcia Holmes, PSA Master & IAPS Eminent-MC; Tony Allain, Pastel Society UK & Royal Society of Marine Artist, UK, Eminent Pastelist & Member Circle IAPS; Cuong Nguyen, PSA Master Pastelist, Master Circle IAPS, and Distinguished Pastelist PSWC.

Seeds: Nature's Artful Engineering
August 4 – October 15, 2023
Seeds: Nature’s Artful Engineering is an exhibit vividly portraying the incredible diversity, ingenuity and beauty of seed dispersal mechanism of plants native to California. Seeds and their dispersal mechanisms are one of the final stages in the evolutionary biology of flowering plants. Against many, many odds they are the final step in ensuring the survival of plant life. The exhibit is based around 30 + high-resolution, close up photographs of the seed structures and dispersal mechanisms of California native plants taken in the wild and in garden settings by Northern California plantspeople and naturalists, John Whittlesey and Jennifer Jewell.
Seeds aims to increase awareness and appreciation of the beauty, diversity, ingenuity and critical importance of seeds and their dispersal mechanisms in California native plants. Through large, detailed photographs and supplemental materials, this exhibit introduces viewers to a wide range of seed dispersal mechanisms and their valuable roles in the environment, ensuring species survival, diversity, and seed banks for the future.

Estampas de la Raza, drawn from the collection of the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, showcases contemporary screenprints and lithographs by Chicanx and Latinx artists living and working in the United States. Gifted to the McNay by San Antonio-based collectors Harriett and Ricardo Romo, the exhibition focuses on themes of identity, memory, and struggle, while celebrating Latinx culture and the collaboration and creativity coming out of print workshops in Texas and California. The exhibition also highlights the important role prints played in the Chicano art movement, and will feature work from the Crocker Art Museum’s permanent collection by members of the Sacramento-based Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF).

Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence

American artist Kehinde Wiley’s new body of paintings and sculptures confronts the silence surrounding systemic violence against Black people through the visual language of the fallen figure. It expands on his 2008 series, Down — a group of large-scale portraits of young Black men inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s The Dead Christ in the Tomb (1521–1522). Wiley investigates the iconography of death and sacrifice in Western art, tracing it across religious, mythological, and historical subjects. In An Archaeology of Silence, the senseless deaths of men and women around the world are transformed into a powerful elegy of resistance. The resulting paintings of figures struck down, wounded, or dead, referencing iconic paintings of mythical heroes, martyrs, and saints, offer a haunting meditation on the legacies of colonialism and systemic racism.
