Lauren Andree: Unseen Works

The Stockton Art League invites the community to a special posthumous art reception honoring the life and work of Lauren Andree (1938–2025) on Saturday, January 10, from 4–6 PM at the Goodwin Gallery.

This exhibition presents previously unseen works, carefully reserved by the artist and never before exhibited at the Goodwin Gallery. These paintings offer a rare and intimate look into Andree’s expansive creative vision, revealing the depth, curiosity, and philosophical inquiry that defined her lifelong practice.

In addition to the exhibition, the Stockton Art League is honored to make works from Lauren Andree’s estate available for purchase at the Goodwin Gallery. These works represent both her artistic legacy and her enduring commitment to arts education.
 

About the Artist

Janyce Lauren Andree (1938–2025), known professionally as Lauren Andree, was a lifelong artist whose passion for painting and exploration shaped a remarkable creative journey. She began winning art awards at the age of 15, setting the foundation for a career defined by artistic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and deep engagement with the creative process.

She earned a Master’s Degree in Fine Art from the University of Wyoming, where her thesis, Art, Source, and Function: An Existential Analysis, explored the philosophical and existential dimensions of art. Her work was exhibited in galleries across California, Colorado, Wyoming, and Vermont, captivating audiences with a wide range of styles, subjects, and mediums.

Lauren was also a dedicated educator, teaching painting, design, and drawing in high schools and private settings. She believed deeply in the transformative power of art and shared her knowledge generously with students of all ages. Her extensive travels took her to major art galleries in more than twenty countries throughout Europe and Asia, experiences that profoundly enriched her artistic vision.

Guided by her belief that

“Painting is a voyage through X dimensions and a way to experience Truth. An artist must reach beyond self into the cosmos to truly create art of lasting value,”

Lauren’s work remains profound and alive—continuing to speak to the soul.

Until her passing in January 2025 at the age of 86, Lauren remained fully devoted to her artistic practice. Her paintings continue to inspire and resonate, carrying forward her passion, wisdom, and boundless creativity.

Lauren Andree Legacy Project

In keeping with her lifelong commitment to arts education, Lauren Andree generously donated her artwork to the Stockton Art League to support artistic learning and community engagement.

100% of proceeds from the sale of her artwork directly benefit the Youth Art Program, providing accessible art education, mentorship, and creative opportunities for young artists in Stockton. Through this gift, Lauren’s belief in the power of art to transform lives continues to shape future generations.

She hadn’t visited in some time, and we began talking about her art and her last exhibition at the Goodwin Gallery in 2015. She shared her vision of donating nearly 300 paintings to support the Youth Art Program, and together we worked to make it a reality. This project came to fruition in January 2025, ensuring her passion for art education will continue for years to come.”

Director's Corner

The beginning of a new year often arrives quietly. Before momentum fully takes hold, there is a short window where things feel unsettled, unfinished, and open. At the Stockton Art League, we take this early stretch of the year as a time for personal reflection and community observation, a pause to look both inward and outward.

Who we were does not have to be the same as who we become. Reflection invites questions, clarity, and discovery. It reminds us that growth is not automatic. It is shaped by choice. What we choose to notice, what we choose to nurture, and where we decide to begin again all matter.

This year has already kicked off with a renewed push to connect with the next generation, a goal that feels both exciting and burdensome. Reaching every student in San Joaquin County can feel overwhelming, but the important lesson is to start and then to improve.

One meaningful step forward has been our advocacy work around Poetry Out Loud. The deadline for San Joaquin County high school students to apply is Friday, January 9, and while the scale of the work is still growing, the impact is real. To date, more than 50 students have been reached, with the Poetry Out Loud national anthology brought directly into their classrooms. This is possible through our advocacy partnership with the California Arts Council. It is a small number compared to the full student population of the county, but it is a start, and it matters.

Earlier this month, I also had the opportunity to work with Lisa Cooperman, University Curator at the University of the Pacific, and Stockton Scholars recipients. Stockton Scholars is a program that provides two to four years of $500 to $1000 scholarships to Stockton high school students pursuing college degrees, paired with mentorship. During our time together, students were asked what they would do if they were in the position of a changemaker. Their responses were powerful. They spoke about how the arts can bring visibility to underrepresented social issues, how creativity adds beauty and meaning to daily life, and how ideas can be shared and implemented without needing a degree or permission. The takeaway was clear. These ideas do not belong to the future. They can begin today.

Looking ahead, February and March will both feature open call exhibitions at the gallery. February will focus on nature related works, while March will bring back a reprise of our Open Call Women’s Show. We are also already planning the 63rd Annual Juried Exhibition at the Haggin Museum, which will be on view in September and October. There are many opportunities ahead to put work forward and to be seen.

Additionally, the Youth Art Program will soon be announcing its full 2026 schedule, offering expanded opportunities for young artists and families throughout the year.

As we move forward together, I invite our community to act with intention. Choose one meaningful step to take this year, one conversation to begin, one risk that aligns with your values. Momentum does not come from waiting for certainty. It comes from showing up with care and courage.

At this early point in the year, not everything is finished, defined, or resolved, and that is okay. This is a season of intention setting, learning, and choosing how we move forward together.

Board Updates

We are pleased to welcome new board members Yhoshua Gutierrez, Callie Russell, and Joann Sagaral to the Stockton Art League Board of Directors. Each brings valuable perspective and commitment to supporting the arts and strengthening the organization as we move into the new year and toward our 90th anniversary.

We would also like to thank Vicki Gaia, who is concluding her service as board member and Treasurer after eight years of service. During her tenure, Vicki provided consistent financial oversight and support during periods of growth and transition, and we appreciate the time and care she contributed to the Stockton Art League.

Staff Updates

We are excited to share staff updates as we move into the new year.

Kat Castaneda has transitioned into the role of Gallery Director, moving from their previous position as Gallery Coordinator. Kat’s leadership of gallery programs and exhibitions, along with their ongoing networking and relationship-building with our membership, has been invaluable. We are excited to see the direction they are shaping for the gallery and the continued development of programming in the space.

Zoe Nelson continues in their role as Youth Art Coordinator, supporting youth arts education and programming throughout the year. Zoe’s work helps ensure consistent, accessible opportunities for young people to engage with the arts.

Jessica Fong, Executive Director, continues to focus on organizational leadership and advocacy. This includes advancing arts advocacy efforts, building partnerships with state and regional organizations, supporting countywide initiatives through the State–Local Partner work, and leading grant research and writing to strengthen long-term sustainability.

Call for Artists: Garden Centennial Exhibition

Stockton Garden Club and Stockton Art League invite artists to participate in a special open call exhibition celebrating the Stockton Garden Club’s 100th Anniversary. This exhibition will be presented as the featured exhibition of the month for February 2026 at the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery.

Artists are invited to submit work inspired by gardens, nature, flora, fauna, and plant life, interpreted through any medium. The entry fee is $10, and the exhibition is open to all artists. Up to 60 artworks will be accepted as registrations are received, until the exhibition is full or Feb 1, 2026. While acceptance is not juried, small prizes will be selected by a juror.

All media are welcome. Artwork must not exceed 12” x 12”.

The Stockton Art League invites community members to help grow and enrich our Artist Directory, a living archive dedicated to recognizing the broad and diverse impact of artists in San Joaquin County.

This effort is not limited to Stockton Art League members. We welcome submissions from and about all artists in the region, regardless of affiliation. This includes artists working in visual arts, music, literature, performance, film, design, dance, and beyond.

This project serves as a recorded history of artistic impact in our region. By contributing, you help preserve the stories, talents, and cultural contributions that shape the creative landscape of our communities.

Join the San Joaquin Arts Advisory Committee!

We’re seeking 8–12 volunteer community members to represent the five districts of San Joaquin County and help guide the growth of arts access and equity across our region.

This advisory group will support the Stockton Art League in its role as a State-Local Partner (SLP) mentee, a program of the California Arts Council. As a mentee organization, we are working to strengthen the county’s arts network, gather community input, and build a foundation for future countywide arts leadership.

Committee members will share local perspectives, identify arts needs, and collaborate on ways to connect artists, organizations, and communities through inclusive, creative opportunities.

Strengthening the Arts Through Collaboration

The Stockton Art League (SAL) has long been dedicated to enriching the arts in our community. We are excited to share recent developments that mark a significant step forward in regional arts advocacy and infrastructure building.

As part of California’s State-Local Partner (SLP) initiative, the Stockton Art League is currently serving as a mentee to Amador Arts, with the goal of becoming the official State and Local Partner for San Joaquin County. This mentorship is part of a statewide effort by the California Arts Council to strengthen arts ecosystems across every county and build sustainable support for artists and cultural organizations.

MISSION:

1. To Promote and Support ALL artists, art organizations, and cultural bearers in San Joaquin County.
2. Create Grants to artists, arts organizations and cultural bearers in San Joaquin County.
3. To host Poetry Out Loud sponsored by the California Arts Council.

2024 SAN JOAQUIN COMMUNITY SURVEY ON ARTS, CULTURE, AND CREATIVITY

Please provide input on forming a Local Arts Agency to represent San Joaquin County (SJC) in partnership with the California Arts Council, a state agency, arts.ca.gov.
 

With support from the California Arts Council, Amador County Arts Council (Amador Arts) has been charged to mentor the creative community of San Joaquin County (SJC) in the development and establishment of a county arts council to participate in the State-Local Partner grant https://arts.ca.gov/grant_program/state-local-partners/. This program directs state funds to each county and provides for local arts and cultural resources, the national Poetry Out Loud recitation competition for high school students, local arts and cultural grants, and partnerships within the network of State-Local Partners.

San Joaquin County-based Creatives, Artists, Arts organizations, Arts students, Teaching Artists, Cultural Practitioners, Cultural Centers, and arts and culture lovers of all disciplines and ages are invited to participate in this public survey. Your feedback is essential to planning an arts council that will best serve the entire community of SJC and represent the SJC creative economy and cultural landscape at the state level.

What Is Poetry Out Loud?

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages high school students to engage deeply with poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. The program helps students develop public speaking skills, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for literary art.

Founded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, and implemented in partnership with state and local arts agencies, Poetry Out Loud has reached millions of students across the United States since its inception. 2026 marks the program’s 21st year.

How It Works:

• Students choose poems from an approved anthology

• They memorize and recite their selections before an audience and panel of judges

• Competitions progress from the classroom to school, county, state, and national levels

• Winners at each level can earn scholarships and cash prizes

Looking Ahead in San Joaquin County:

We are excited to share that San Joaquin County is working toward participating in Poetry Out Loud in 2026, with a county-wide competition hosted by Stockton Art League in collaboration with the San Joaquin County Office of Education. This partnership will help provide a new platform for youth voices and elevate the role of poetry in education throughout the region.

Who Can Participate:

• High school students in grades 9–12

• Schools, teachers, and educational organizations interested in poetry and performance arts

• Community partners and arts educators who want to help facilitate local competitions

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is a vital federal agency that supports arts programs across the United States, including in every congressional district. It funds a wide range of initiatives, from arts education and community development to cultural preservation and innovation. The NEA's investments not only enrich our cultural landscape but also contribute significantly to local economies and job creation.​

Recently, the NEA has faced challenges, including proposed budget cuts and policy shifts that threaten its ability to support diverse and inclusive arts programming. In response, Americans for the Arts has launched the "Protect the NEA" campaign, urging citizens to advocate for sustained federal funding for the arts. The campaign emphasizes the importance of the NEA in fostering creativity, supporting artists, and ensuring that the arts remain accessible to all Americans.​Americans for the Arts

Side Street Projects

FREE SKILLSHARES WITH SIDE STREET PROJECTS

The “FREE Skillshares with Side Street Projects” series occurs every second Saturday of the month at our organization's headquarters. It is open to all ages, and skill levels. Each session is led by a community-based Teaching Artist who guides participants in learning hard and soft art skills. 

Teaching Artists are asked to create a “toolkit” for participants and for those who could not attend the event to use at home as a DIY (Do-it-yourself) or DIT (Do-it-together) resource. These toolkits are generally documents, videos, zines, or podcasts.   

Our goal is to offer free learning opportunities that empower the community to expand their creative endeavors. We think it is important we provide accessible art to a range of experiences and learning capacities.
