August Artist of the Month
“Generations”
This show, “Generations”, which includes paintings, drawings, and ceramic art, represents my interest in the rich substance and compositional beauty of old photographs that I possess. I inherited them from my grandparents-some subjects of the photos are known and some unknown to me. Most of these people have lived their lives and are gone or have grown much older, but their vitality and presence in life is still visible in these photos.
I have been interested for years in finding ways to create art work using them as inspiration. I found a technique that I could use to represent these photos on my pottery and found that the images also worked with my decorating style. The images I have created on my pottery are simplified representations, but as I work with each image, I find I feel a connection to the person(s) whose photograph I’m observing, the event that they are part of, and the place and time where they are. I have loved getting to know them through recreating these moments in time. I plan to continue this effort because each photo represents another person to honor, remember, and relate to and because the making of each piece adds something that is meaningful to my life experience.
Bio
Glenda Burns has had a life-long interest in art and in creating art. She has been pursuing this interest in earnest since her retirement from a teaching career in 2001. Glenda has explored various forms of artistic expression throughout her life and has worked successfully with multiple forms of artistic media, including oil painting, ceramic art, drawing and the painting of silk scarves. She has taken numerous painting and drawing classes at Delta College, and has shown at various exhibitions in the area. She is known for her colorful ceramic works and brightly colored scarves.
Artist Statement
In the variety of media with which I have worked, my objective has been to make things as beautiful and as full of life as I can make them be. I love working with color, and in oil painting, I enjoy exploring the relationships between colors and the movement that line, color, and form create. I work in a quick and loose way, applying lots of paint, experimenting and discovering as I go.
My work with pottery and with silk painting offers me an opportunity to make something people can use and enjoy. In pottery work, I endeavor to create pieces that feel good to hold and are decorated in a way that is colorful, cheerful, and rich with complex designs.
The Artist's Reception is August 11th from 4:00PM - 7:00PM.

President's Message
What if a gigantic 3 story tall red bunny rabbit met you as you arrived back home into Stockton airport? Would you grin, shake your head in puzzlement as you passed by or would you stop for a moment in wonderment?
My reaction when I first glimpsed the huge “Leap” sculpture by the late, Lawrence Argent, in Sacramento airport was one of awe which left me quite inspired. My thoughts turned towards our capacity for creativity and opportunities within our community.
SAL’s Airport Art committee had our first meeting with, Russell Stark, the new director of the Stockton Airport and we are honored and excited to begin collaborating and curating art together.

Abstract Watercolor Workshop with Julie Trail

This is a three hour workshop designed to free the creativity within you, allowing you to make discoveries that can be surprising in many ways. Color, design, and splashy play with paint will work together as you create a painting.
No experience needed. Materials Included.

Pre-Registration and Registration are non-refundable but transferable. The Stockton Art League reserves the right to cancel or postpone courses due to low enrollment, or other unforeseen circumstances (illness, weather, etc). The Stockton Art League is not responsible for travel expenses incurred by the participant in the event of a cancellation or postponement. If you are preregistered, the Stockton Art League will attempt to notify you should a course be rescheduled or cancelled. Session Groups
Ages 6-8: 9:00am -10:30am
Ages 9-13: 11:00am - 12:30pm
Ages 6-20: 1:00pm - 2:30pm
This program is funded in part by a Muller Niven Grant sponsored by the Stockton Arts Commission.
Instruction will focus on the basics of drawing, including multiple media studies in value, perspective, composition, contour drawing, positive vs. negative space, and color theory. Students must sign up for the entire series, and the classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. There will be a waiting list in case of cancellations. Scholarships are available.
A reception for the students, parents and friends showcasing the students' artwork will be held on November 3rd.
Mission Statement of the Stockton Art League Youth Art Program
To provide low cost, high quality art instruction to the youth of Stockton, and to instill in them an appreciation of the arts as an process in all endeavors, and a discovery of the power of creativity.

D'Pharr (Dolores Pharr Smith) Estate Artwork on Display at the Goodwin Gallery for the month of August.
Only one month remaingn, you have the opportunity to purchase and own an original painting by D'Pharr, small paintings $50; large paintings $150. 50% of commissions will go towards the SAL's Goodwin Endowment Fund. Membership 10% discounts are non-applicable with these artworks.

Open to the public and SAL members, Basic Concepts of drawing are vital to every visual artistic medium. Mora brings his 39 years of experience as artist, teacher, and judge to the Stockton community at the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery. Students will participate by practicing the basic concepts of contour drawing, sketching, and shading with black and white before going on to colored pencil.

Open to all artists (Stockton Art League members and non-member; beginning and advanced levels). The participants share their art experiences, exchange notes on new projects, and offer feedback on works in progress. There is a suggested $2 donation to help support more Stockton Art League programs.
Thursday Afternoon Open Studio
11AM-3PM
Open to all artists (Stockton Art League members and non-member) with various media including pastels, acrylic, and oil. Painting and drawing is encouraged. A small sink is available for clean up of water-based materials. There is a suggested $2 donation to help support more Stockton Art League programs.
