Steve Pereira has had a lifetime of accomplishment both national and internationally, but his heart has always belonged to Stockton. As a professional photographer, he has been involved in projects that have taken him from deep underground mines to 10,000 feet in the sky. Besides projects that include medical operations and documentation of Presidential inaugurations, he has a worldwide reputation for his maritime photography. His work has been exhibited not only at numerous Stockton venues including a one-man show at the Haggin Museum, the Law Library, the San Joaquin County Administration building and the Tidewater Gallery.
In 1963, while crewing as a work-over aboard the M.S. Vassa Leader of Finland, Steve Pereira was asked by the chief mate if he could print a personal negative. Little did either of the men know that this request would mark the beginning of a successful career in maritime photography for Steve, combining his love of the sea with the beauty of great ships. Later, with this saltwater experience behind him, Steve returned to the Bay Area and Stockton. When he finally settled back in Stockton in 1965, he married Barbara, his wife of 53 years, and they raised three wonderful children. Steve’s 40-Year-Retrospective Deepwater Steel was the inaugural exhibit for the San Francisco Maritime Center. The Dimbola Lodge on the Isle of Wight in England sponsored his first international Deepwater Steel exhibit. Most recently he designed the elevator doors at the San Joaquin County Administration building.
He considers his life to be blessed and is still fully active. Steve is honored to share his 55-year love affair with photography and invites you to explore this intimate journey along with him.

The introductory classes focuses on the fundamentals of working with cold wax. Cold wax is combined with oil paints creating a unique and versatile medium that does not require a heat source or fusing tools. This amazing medium has great depth and lends itself to representational imagery as well as abstraction.
Emphasis is placed on the understanding of cold wax materials, support, tools and techniques using oil paints, dry pigments, a squeegee, brayer, palette knife, our fingers and other non-traditional tools; working wet-in-wet, wet on dry; and the development of rich textures, lines, marks, oil paint sticks, incising, scraping back, color, and composition. Come to learn, have fun and get messy with this amazing medium! (Please bring a medium sized box to transport paintings.)

Space is limited, pre-register to guarantee your spot. Limit 10.
The session is for 3 hours, and models typically start with short quick poses and finish with longer poses. All artists must sign up in advance and be at least 18 years old. The session fee is $15, and artists must bring their own easel, drawing board, and materials.
Etiquette: Once the session begins, the gallery doors will be locked. Late arrivals are welcome, but they will be allowed access only during a break between poses. There is NO PHOTOGRAPHY OF MODELS allowed. Artists are encouraged to tip models and thank them at the end of the session. Conversations and music must be kept at a low level.

March 2019 Session
Enrollment Open
Dates: Saturdays, March 9, 16, 23, & 30.
Session Groups
Ages 6-8: 9:00am -10:30am
Ages 9-13: 11:00am - 12:30pm
Ages 6-20: 1:00pm - 2:30pm
This program is funded in part by a grant sponsored by the Stockton Arts Commission.
Instruction will focus on the basics of drawing, including multiple media studies in value, perspective, composition, contour drawing, positive vs. negative space, and color theory. Students must sign up for the entire series, and the classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. There will be a waiting list in case of cancellations. Scholarships are available.
A reception for the students, parents and friends showcasing the students' artwork will be held on November 3rd.
Mission Statement of the Stockton Art League Youth Art Program
To provide low cost, high quality art instruction to the youth of Stockton, and to instill in them an appreciation of the arts as an process in all endeavors, and a discovery of the power of creativity.

Open to the public and SAL members, Basic Concepts of drawing are vital to every visual artistic medium. Mora brings his 39 years of experience as artist, teacher, and judge to the Stockton community at the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery. Students will participate by practicing the basic concepts of contour drawing, sketching, and shading with black and white before going on to colored pencil.

Open to all artists (Stockton Art League members and non-member; beginning and advanced levels). The participants share their art experiences, exchange notes on new projects, and offer feedback on works in progress. There is a suggested $2 donation to help support more Stockton Art League programs.
Thursday Afternoon Open Studio
11AM-3PM
Open to all artists (Stockton Art League members and non-member) with various media including pastels, acrylic, and oil. Painting and drawing is encouraged. A small sink is available for clean up of water-based materials. There is a suggested $2 donation to help support more Stockton Art League programs.

Tuleburg Press is working to build literacy and writing confidence for all ages through book publishing, one-on-one mentoring, community outreach, and writing workshops.
Those activities occur at THE WRITE PLACE, a downtown Stockton creative writing and book arts center. Modeled after 826 Valencia in San Francisco, 916 Ink in Sacramento, and the San Francisco Center for the Book, THE WRITE PLACE teaches writing, bookbinding, and letterpress printing on vintage presses.
We see the center as a walking-distance friendly spot for students enrolled in the many downtown town schools, but it will offer creative writing and book arts workshops for writers of all ages.
Writing groups and book clubs will be able to use the space in the evenings. On weekends THE WRITE PLACE will host author readings and artists who teach paper making, book binding, and paper crafts of many kinds.
