Shelley Castillo Garcia

|
Shelley Castillo Garcia is a local artist known for her paper and acrylic portraits. Working primarily in grayscale, her captivating sculptures resemble 3D topographic maps and draw inspiration from artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Orson Byron Lowell. The focus of her subject matter is the female form and her compositions evoke themes of power, identity, vulnerability, and womanhood.

With each piece, Shelley seeks to capture and express the complexity and mystique of her subjects, enticing the observer to study the portraits from different angles and perspectives. Always seeking new opportunities, Shelley has recently incorporated other materials and techniques into her artwork, specifically wood and laser cutting machines. In addition to frequenting local coffee shops and bookstores, Shelley can be found managing finances for the Haggin Museum on most days of the week.

Beautiful blue cyanotype prints are easy to make – you don’t need to be an artist to get amazing results! In this introductory class you’ll learn all the basics of this popular alternative photographic technique.
Using light sensitive chemicals you’ll expose prints in the sun and process them in water. By the time you leave you’ll have 4 gorgeous blue 8 x 10 cyanotype prints and the know-how to create more at home.
Participants should bring an assortment of plant materials or interesting objects to print with. Pressed plants and flowers work quite well. Bring your favorites to make prints that are uniquely yours!

Create a beautiful mosaic remembrance of your pet from one of your favorite pet's photographs! The only thing you'll need to bring is your apron and creative ideas! UPON REGISTRATION, send a color image of your pet's portrait to Kristi Halva at [email protected] so she can make sure to have all the right colors and materials. Registration for this class will end a week from the class date, so sign up early.

In 2008 Judy Knott went on an art studio tour in Elk Grove California where she was living at the time. A friend of her husband had just given her some oil paints and a small easel. At the last tour stop she met Kate Anderson whose artwork she admired and who had decided to start teaching art again. She jumped at the chance to take lessons. “Thank goodness that my first experience learning how to paint was from someone who knew how to bring out the best in me,” she said.
Judy has gone on to receive her Master Artist certification and has shown her work at Crocker Art Museum, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art and the California State Fair. She has won many awards in both local, national and international art shows.
When asked what inspires her, she responds “There are so many things that inspire me it’s hard to list them all. What I can say is this…colors and shadows intrigue me as do old structures and interesting shapes. I love animals, so they do pop into my artwork as well. Travel also gives me ideas from just being around other people and cultures.”
Recently she has been painting more abstractly although staying true to her representational roots. Thus, her abstracts always have an element of realism in them. Her artwork has been called painterly, inventive, fun and colorful, with a little wit thrown in on the side. “I want to have fun creating my art and for those who see it to have fun as well. I hope viewers will do the same thing I do when I finish a painting—smile.”

The session is for 3 hours, and models typically start with short quick poses and finish with longer poses. All artists must sign up in advance and be at least 18 years old. The session fee is $15, and artists must bring their own easel, drawing board, and materials.
Etiquette: Once the session begins, the gallery doors will be locked. Late arrivals are welcome, but they will be allowed access only during a break between poses. There is NO PHOTOGRAPHY OF MODELS allowed. Artists are encouraged to tip models and thank them at the end of the session. Conversations and music must be kept at a low level.

Seeking Artist of the Month for 2020!
Stockton Art League is currently accepting artists interested in participating in a solo show to be part of our Artist of The Month schedule in 2020. Currently only 3 months are reserved (May, June and October). Artists who wish to be involved will provide 3 choices of month (in order of preference), up to 3 photos of their art work, and contact information. Priority is given to SAL members.
You may email this information to [email protected]. Artists are encouraged to apply only every 2 years for solo artist slot, allowing opportunity for other members to engage.
Other guidelines are as follows:
There is no hanging fee required for paintings in this solo exhibit.
Artist(s) is responsible for hanging their own show at a time and date convenient to both artist and Gallery Director. All work must be wired for hanging.
Inventory list (typed) of work in exhibit to be provided to Gallery Director on day of hanging. List must include title of work, media and price. Director will create wall tags accordingly.
Artist is to provide biography and photos to Gallery publicity chair for publication in local newspaper, Collagraph newsletter, and various social media sites by the 15th of previous month. Artist is responsible for marketing their exhibit through their own social media and contacts, thereby increasing outreach for the exhibition.
Artist provides light fare and refreshments the evening of the reception (second Saturday of month from 4:00-7:00 pm.) Gallery supplies tables, tablecloths, utensils, and, if available, wine. Artist may choose to provide live music for reception.
Gallery will receive the standard 30% from any sales incurred.

Mission Statement of the Stockton Art League Youth Art Program
To provide low cost, high quality art instruction to the youth of Stockton, and to instill in them an appreciation of the arts as an process in all endeavors, and a discovery of the power of creativity.
Cost: $20 for the series of four classes. All proceeds go toward the class materials and instruction. Payment options: signup at the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery or pay online at www.squareup.com/store/stocktonartleague
This program is funded in part by a grant sponsored by the Stockton Arts Commission.
Instruction will focus on the basics of drawing, including multiple media studies in value, perspective, composition, contour drawing, positive vs. negative space, and color theory. Students must sign up for the entire series, and the classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. There will be a waiting list in case of cancellations. Scholarships are available.

With the change in Gallery Hours, the required "Exhibiting Member" shifts will be 3.5 hour shifts (11am-2:30pm & 2:30pm-6pm). In addition, the 6 hours per month requirement has been changed to 3.5 hours per month (equal to 1 shift)

Open to the public and SAL members, Basic Concepts of drawing are vital to every visual artistic medium. Mora brings his 39 years of experience as artist, teacher, and judge to the Stockton community at the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery. Students will participate by practicing the basic concepts of contour drawing, sketching, and shading with black and white before going on to colored pencil.

Tuleburg Press is working to build literacy and writing confidence for all ages through book publishing, one-on-one mentoring, community outreach, and writing workshops.
Those activities occur at THE WRITE PLACE, a downtown Stockton creative writing and book arts center. Modeled after 826 Valencia in San Francisco, 916 Ink in Sacramento, and the San Francisco Center for the Book, THE WRITE PLACE teaches writing, bookbinding, and letterpress printing on vintage presses.
We see the center as a walking-distance friendly spot for students enrolled in the many downtown town schools, but it will offer creative writing and book arts workshops for writers of all ages.
Writing groups and book clubs will be able to use the space in the evenings. On weekends THE WRITE PLACE will host author readings and artists who teach paper making, book binding, and paper crafts of many kinds.
