With great news, the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery has successfully been open since April 5th. This is all due to the help of our artists who have been able to staff the desk, clean the gallery, distribute passports, hand out art kits to kids and families, post on social media, and of course, create amazing works for display to share with the community.
As we prepare to reopen fully with the rest of the State of California, we look forward to bringing back our in-person programs. Committees are working on how to add these events to our calendar. If you are interested in a specific program or have a request a new program, please reach out by email to [email protected] and share your thoughts.

Thank you for being a part of our story and helping us throughout last year. In 2020, we met many challenges including COVID-19 and the water damage at the Goodwin Gallery.
It was through the generosity of members and patrons that we were able to continuing to make an impact. Even from afar, the membership was able leave ripples throughout the community.
We overcame these challenges by continuing to spread the joys of making art. Some of our accomplishes included delivering 80 art kits to Mary Graham Children's Shelter to youth in need. We were able to put together a 300+ page virtual art catalog showcasing our community and viewed over 1300 times. We created an Emerging Artists fund with a startup of $1000 to go towards supporting new artists early in their practice. We were also able to launch six arts initiatives through a California Arts Council grant to build relationship with community organizers to support artists and the arts in our region. We did this by pushing through adversity. We will continue to grow the arts in Stockton and San Joaquin County and we want you with us on our journey.
2021 marks 85 years as an organization and 20 years at the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery. We look forward to, and appreciate, your continued support of the Stockton Art League.

$110,000 Raised to Support the Arts in Stockton
|
|
|
Stockton Strong Coalition, in collaboration with HATCH Workshop and the Stockton Art League, distributed COVID-19 Artist Relief Grant initiative that will distribute unrestricted $1,000 grants to 100 Stockton artists who have experienced financial hardship and artistic income loss during the COVID-19 crisis.
The COVID-19 pandemic has restricted the livelihoods of artists as galleries, music venues, museums, studios, and schools closed their doors and limited artist access to showcase their work and generate income. Additionally, artists tend to engage in gig work and restaurant jobs to supplement their income while creating. As COVID-19 closed many of these establishments, local artists simultaneously lost income from art engagements and side jobs.
“We want all creative professionals in Stockton who have felt the pain of the pandemic to know that they are eligible to apply for this grant opportunity,” said Elazar Abraham of HATCH Workshop. “Sculptors, writers, digital artists, performers, curators and more; they’re all artists in our eyes! We want folks who need funds the most to apply.”
A development team of local artists and arts organization representatives, including InnerG, Little Manila Rising, Tuleburg Press, and With Our Words, created the grant application and will review submissions for eligibility. Thereafter, 40 awards will be selected through a randomized lottery system, and distributed by the Stockton Art League.
Last year, less than 1% of local COVID-19 relief funding went directly to the arts community and this effort seeks to bridge that gap. “Stockton artists have been duly impacted by the pandemic and are extremely valuable to our community,” said Keegen Gillette of Stockton Strong. “As we’ve all relied on the arts to bring us joy through this difficult time, we hope that this initiative will help local artists feel important and connected.”
“This collaborative effort reflects the best parts of the Stockton arts community,” said Jessica Fong of the Stockton Art League. “COVID-19 has challenged our ways of sharing and experiencing creative expression, but has proved once again that Stockton’s artists are resilient despite economic hardships. By working together, we are continuing to advocate for the arts and artists that enrich our community.”

Stockton Art League has been awarded a $10,000 National Endowment for the Arts: American Communities Grant for 2021-2022
|
|
This grant is to help fund a Multi-Event Arts Symposium to bring awareness to artists and arts resources to the community. Our main goals are to train artists and arts administrators for better arts practices, connect entrepreneurs to resources in the community by working with local officials, provide artists opportunities to present and exhibit portfolios, host live performances, and distribute a cross-organizational asset map resource to the public. These events are flexible to a hybrid or virtual model in order to accommodate gathering policies are in effect during the planned events.
This project is one of six initiatives of the organization’s strategic plan to better the arts in Stockton and San Joaquin County which was completed in fall of 2020 through a California Arts Council grant.

Saturday, Paula will show participants how to create stunning image transfers from magazines, Gelli plates, and acrylic paint. Learn experimental techniques with this fun medium such as inking with masked objects and making ghost prints.
Sunday, Katelynn will show participants how to assemble their images into a beautiful drum leaf-bound book. A drum leaf book is an adhesive book structure made up of single folios attached back to back. Similar in make-up to a children’s “board book,” it utilizes minimal adhesive amounts, avoiding expansion and contraction issues. Only one side of each folio is visible in the finished book, making it an ideal structure to use when it’s only possible to print on one side of a sheet of paper. It’s perfect for printmakers and artists working with thick, stiff, or digitally optimized papers. Because there is no sewing in the gutter of the sections, it allows for seamless image crossover across the fold and it lays very flat. Requiring minimal equipment and tools, it’s quickly made and can vary greatly in its function and appearance depending on the paper, detailing, and covering material choices.
Participants will walk away with any images they made and a drum leaf book showing off some of the images! The cost of materials is included in the class price of $95.
