and by all counts, very exciting. Our gallery Director
Jessica Fong, and her assistant, Kat Castaneda, did a
great job of hanging our students’ work.
Thank you all for your time and effort this past month;
the classes were, I hope, challenging as well as rewarding.
Feel free to come in to view the work in the gallery during July open hours
(Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 4:00 and Saturdays from12:00 to 2:00.)
And for sure, join us all in celebrating the art and the seventh year of our Youth Art Program.

The California Arts Council (CAC) visited the Stockton Art League thanks to the hard work of Board President Elazar Abraham, arts advocate Amy Portello Nelson, and Stockton-native now CAC Outreach & Events Coordinator Qiana Moore. SAL was on the route for art space tours for the State's arts and culture organization.
Stockton is on the map for California's creative future!

California Arts Council on the Road: Executive Director Jonathan Moscone meets with San Joaquin County’s arts and cultural workforce members
Following the Council’s meeting in Stockton this April, CAC Executive Director Jon Moscone returned this week to visit with grantees, artists, and community members making tremendous impacts throughout San Joaquin County.
The day was filled with site visits to local museums, galleries, artist workshops, and literary organizations, including a community listening session and a meeting with the City of Stockton staff.
Director Moscone’s presence in San Joaquin County exemplifies the California Arts Council’s commitment to nurturing artistic expression in every corner of our state, and he enjoyed meeting with artists and local leaders who represent a resourceful and mighty group committed to expanding arts opportunities for residents of all ages and backgrounds.
Special thank you to: Elazar Abraham, HATCH Workshop and Amy Portello-Nelson from San Joaquin Community Foundation, and Susan Obert from Haggin Museum hosted the various parts of the day.

Discover the joy of printmaking without a press in this immersive 2-day workshop with instructor Franca Van Allen. Dive into the exploratory mode of art as we explore various techniques such as silicon plates, mixed media, stencils, masks, monoprints, and more. Learn from renowned artists like Warhol, Klee, Matisse, Picasso, and Rauschenberg who have pushed the boundaries of printmaking. No experience necessary. All materials provided.

Join us for "The Artist's Way," a 12-week creativity workshop facilitated by Anne McCaughey (Annie Mack), an artist and published author. This workshop is open to all adults (minimum age 18) who are interested in exploring and enhancing their creative abilities across various disciplines such as visual arts, writing, performance art, and more.
Throughout the workshop, we will delve into a range of techniques designed to help you effectively manage your time, resources, and develop productive habits that align with your creative vision and talents. Anne McCaughey, who has personally benefited from implementing the techniques and suggestions from "The Artist's Way," will guide you through this transformative journey.
Activities in the workshop may include, but are not limited to:
- Engaging group discussions
- Assignments from the textbook
- Individual writing practice
- Small artsy projects like collages, sketches, origami, etc.
- Observation walks
- Short inspiring videos
- Music clips
- Various other activities aimed at sparking creativity
To fully participate and make the most of this workshop, you will be assigned regular tasks to practice at home, as well as brief readings from the textbook before each session to prepare for group discussions and respect everyone's time commitments.

Scratchboard Workshop with Caroline Henry at the Goodwin Gallery for all levels. Finish the afternoon with two scratchboard drawings and an abundance of knowledge about the scratchboard process.
Schedule:
Part I (90mins) 10am-11:30am
- Create an animal portrait from a traced photo. 5x5 square. Students may bring a photo of a pet or wild animal or use an animal photo from my collection.
11:30am Break for Lunch
- Bring your lunch or explore the many food options on the Miracle Mile.
Part II (90mins) 12:30pm - 2:00pm
- Create a Still Life from a small still life setup
- Skills taught: how to use various scratch board tools. use of white carbon paper and with scratchboard, types of scratchboard surfaces, showing fur or feathers, deciding on and creative backgrounds, techniques such as cross-hatching that are the same in ink drawing and scratchboard, creating your own drawing directly on scratchboard as a step beyond tracing a photo or drawing. 5x5 Square

July Artists of the Month at the Goodwin Gallery
We will be matting and hanging our students’ best work for display during the month of July. As mentioned previously, keep your work in a portfolio, so we can choose the best ones from each student to put up on the wall.
The tentative reception date is July 29 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
We typically serve refreshments, and the reception is open to all.

A CAST OF BLUES

Blues music was born in Mississippi, came of age in Chicago, and went on to inspire generations of rock and rollers, ranging from the British invasion of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to contemporary groups, such as The Black Keys. As one of America’s contributions to the world of music, the blues took root in the fertile soil of the Mississippi Delta, a flood plain covering 7,000 square miles between the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers. Early blues greats in the Delta pioneered the strong rhythmic style of music, accenting the raw emotions of the lyrics by squeezing chords out of a guitar with a bottleneck or metal slide.
A celebration of Mississippi’s rich musical heritage, The exhibition A Cast of Blues features 15 resin-cast masks of blues legends created by artist Sharon McConnell-Dickerson, as well as 15 color photographs of performers and of juke joints by acclaimed photographer Ken Murphy. Now visitors to the Haggin Museum can experience the exhibition, A Cast of Blues, opening June 15, 2023.

“Lenses” explores how five photographers visualize five different subjects when given the same space, looks and time. What elements of style can we bring in during and in post production that make an image our own? Lenses celebrates creative aesthetic, artistic differences and brings together a breadth of talent in both modeling and photography levels from around the region. Through My Father’s Eyes: The Filipino American Photographs of Ricardo Ocreto Alvarado is a collection of 50 photographs chosen from more than 3,000 discovered by his daughter, Janet Alvarado after his death. This exhibit offers a rare view into the daily lives of Filipino Americans in the post-World War II era.

Amidst the political and social upheaval at the beginning of the 20th century, German and Austrian artists turned to stark, almost brutal imagery to create a new kind of art. Figural distortion, flattened perspective, and straightforward technique served to express their feelings and thoughts in visual form. Ranging from perceptive self-portraits to biting social critiques, this exhibition explores the subjects and styles of Expressionist artists, including Max Beckmann, Georg Grosz, and Käthe Kollwitz.

Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence

|
American artist Kehinde Wiley’s new body of paintings and sculptures confronts the silence surrounding systemic violence against Black people through the visual language of the fallen figure. It expands on his 2008 series, Down — a group of large-scale portraits of young Black men inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s The Dead Christ in the Tomb (1521–1522). Wiley investigates the iconography of death and sacrifice in Western art, tracing it across religious, mythological, and historical subjects. In An Archaeology of Silence, the senseless deaths of men and women around the world are transformed into a powerful elegy of resistance. The resulting paintings of figures struck down, wounded, or dead, referencing iconic paintings of mythical heroes, martyrs, and saints, offer a haunting meditation on the legacies of colonialism and systemic racism.

Ansel Adams in Our Time

Looking forward and back, this exhibition of more than 100 works by photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams (1902 – 1984) places him in direct conversation with contemporary artists and the photographers who influenced him. Laid out in seven sections tracing Adams’s artistic development, the exhibition features some of his most-loved photographs, including images of Yosemite, San Francisco, and the American Southwest. Adams’s works are shown alongside prints by 19th-century landscape photographers, such as Carleton Watkins and Eadweard Muybridge, as well contemporary artists like Trevor Paglen, Will Wilson, and Catherine Opie. Their work engages anew with the sites and subjects that occupied Adams throughout his life — from national parks to the use and misuse of natural resources. Adams’s legacy continues to inspire and provoke, influencing how we envision the landscape and serving as an urgent call to preserve our environment.
