Lauren Andree Legacy Project
|
|
|
Janyce Lauren Andree (1938–2025) was a devoted artist and educator whose passion for the arts extended beyond her own creative practice. In keeping with her lifelong commitment to arts education, Lauren generously donated her artwork to the Stockton Art League to further the pursuit of artistic learning and community engagement.
All proceeds from the sale of her artwork—100% of sales—go directly to support the Youth Art Program, providing accessible art education, mentorship, and opportunities for young artists in Stockton. This program ensures that future generations have the resources and encouragement to explore their creativity, just as Lauren did throughout her life.
Her gift is a testament to her belief in the power of art to transform lives and communities. Through the continued appreciation and acquisition of her works, Lauren’s legacy lives on, inspiring new artists and fostering a vibrant arts culture for years to come.
“Lauren was one of the first Stockton Art League members I met when I became gallery director. She hadn’t visited in some time, and we started a conversation about her art and her last exhibition at the Goodwin Gallery in 2015. She shared her vision of donating nearly 300 paintings to support the Youth Art Program, and together, we worked to make it a reality. This project came to fruition in January 2025, ensuring her passion for art education will continue for years to come.”
— Jessica Fong, Executive Director, Stockton Art League

Janyce Lauren Andree (1938–2025)
Janyce Lauren Andree, known professionally as Lauren Andree, was a lifelong artist whose passion for painting and exploration shaped a remarkable creative journey. She began winning art awards at the age of 15, setting the foundation for a career defined by artistic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and a deep engagement with the creative process.
She earned a Master’s Degree in Fine Art from the University of Wyoming, where her thesis, Art, Source, and Function: An Existential Analysis, explored the philosophical and existential dimensions of art. Her work was exhibited in galleries across California, Colorado, Wyoming, and Vermont, captivating audiences with a diverse range of styles, subject matter, and mediums.
In addition to her personal practice, Lauren was a dedicated educator, teaching painting, design, and drawing in high schools and private settings. She believed in the transformative power of art and shared her knowledge generously with students of all ages. Her extensive travels took her to major art galleries in over twenty countries throughout Europe and Asia, broadening her perspective and enriching her artistic vision.
Lauren’s work was a profound exploration of the human experience, guided by her belief:
"Painting is a voyage through X dimensions and a way to experience Truth. An artist must reach beyond self into the cosmos to truly create art of lasting value. Profound and alive, her art speaks to the soul."
Until her passing in January 2025 at the age of 86, Lauren remained fully devoted to her artistic practice. Her paintings continue to inspire and resonate, carrying forward her passion, wisdom, and boundless creativity for generations to come.

As we step into March, I want to take a moment to recognize the many ways we show up for creativity—not just in the work we produce, but in how we support, encourage, and uplift one another. Art is more than an individual pursuit; it’s a shared experience, shaped by the voices, expressions, and connections we cultivate. Whether you are deeply immersed in your creative practice or just beginning to explore new ideas, know that your voice matters, your work matters, and this community thrives because of the perspectives and creativity each of you brings.
This month, we invite you to celebrate Women’s History Month with us at the Goodwin Gallery on March 8 for a special exhibition and reception featuring the work of local women artists and advocates. This exhibition honors the creativity, resilience, and impact of women in the arts, offering a space to reflect on their contributions and the power of artistic expression. Whether you are an artist, art lover, or community supporter, we hope you’ll join us for an inspiring evening of connection and celebration.
We are also honored to introduce the Lauren Andree Legacy Project, a lasting tribute to the late Lauren Andree (1938–2025). Lauren generously donated nearly 300 of her paintings to support arts education, and 100% of the proceeds from the sale of her artwork will directly fund the Youth Art Program. Her generosity ensures that future generations of young artists have access to creative opportunities, continuing her lifelong dedication to the arts.
Additionally, we are excited to share that Stockton Art League has been selected as a mentee in the California Arts Council’s State and Local Partnership Mentor Program, working alongside the Amador County Arts Council. This partnership strengthens our ability to advocate for the arts in our region, providing valuable mentorship and collaboration as we continue to grow and expand our impact.
In the spirit of creative collaboration, we are pleased to share that we were able to donate our 35+ heavy-duty gray chairs to Changing Faces Theater Company in Lodi. Founded in 2002 by Mike Bartram, Changing Faces Theater Company (CFTC) has been a staple of the Central Valley’s performing arts scene, producing Pop-Up Plays, studio performances, and theater education programs. After facing challenges due to the pandemic, CFTC has remained resilient, bringing over 120 performances to dozens of locations and providing drama clubs, classes, and camps for youth. We are thrilled that these chairs will continue to support the arts in another local creative space.
As we move through March, I encourage you to embrace and share your creative voice—visit the gallery, attend an event, or take a moment to reflect on what creativity means to you. Every act of expression, no matter how small, adds to the vibrancy of our community.
Looking forward to another month of inspiration, connection, and creativity.
With appreciation,
Jessica

Awareness of Policy Changes with the National Endowment for the Arts
|
|
|
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has announced significant changes to its funding programs, notably discontinuing the Challenge America grants, which have historically supported small arts organizations in underserved communities. The NEA will now prioritize projects that commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Article: hyperallergic.com
At the Local Level
For organizations like the Stockton Art League, which benefited from the Arts Engagement in American Communities Grant Program in 2021 to support workshops at the Goodwin Gallery and collaborations with other art spaces, this shift could have substantial implications. Given that San Joaquin County has historically faced challenges in securing arts funding—due to factors such as limited competitiveness, a shortage of grant writers, and the absence of strong state and local partnerships—the discontinuation of programs aimed at underserved areas may further limit funding opportunities.
It's important to note that such significant changes from the NEA are uncommon without prior discussions or webinars. Usually in the occasion to celebrate national milestones, additional grant programs would be added and grant award amounts would be adjusted. Organizations should stay informed about these federal changes, as they will impact how programming can be planned and executed moving forward.
More than just Nonprofits and Education Entities
The discontinuation of Challenge America grants and similar funding shifts at the NEA will not only impact organizations like the Stockton Art League but also individual artists and the broader public who benefit from arts programming. Without these grants, small and mid-sized arts nonprofits may struggle to offer free or low-cost workshops, exhibitions, and community events, limiting access to artistic experiences, especially in historically underfunded areas like San Joaquin County.
This change may reduce opportunities for artists to showcase their work, receive stipends for community engagement, and contribute to a thriving local arts scene. While alternative funding sources may emerge, these federal changes will reshape how artists, nonprofits, and communities interact with and sustain the arts moving forward.

Strengthening the Arts Through Collaboration
The Stockton Art League (SAL) has long been dedicated to enriching the arts in our community, and we are excited to share how our alignment with the newly established San Joaquin Arts Council will further serve both our membership and the broader Stockton area. This emerging partnership represents a significant step toward uniting the artistic community across the region and building a stronger foundation for creativity and cultural engagement.
For our members, this collaboration means increased access to resources, knowledge-sharing opportunities, and new platforms to showcase your work. The Arts Council’s mission to promote and support artists, arts organizations, and cultural initiatives aligns closely with SAL’s goals of providing artistic development and professional opportunities. Together, we will seek funding to address gaps in programming, advocate for the arts as a vital part of our community, and create pathways for growth that benefit individual artists and the larger arts ecosystem.
This partnership will also strengthen our connection with other community organizations, allowing SAL to collaborate on projects that amplify the impact of the arts in Stockton. By working alongside other cultural partners and leveraging shared resources, we will continue to expand the reach of the Stockton Art League and ensure that the arts remain a thriving and accessible part of our city’s identity.
We look forward to bringing these enhanced opportunities to our members and the community as we take this important step in strengthening the arts in Stockton and San Joaquin County. Together, we can build a vibrant future for the arts.

This program directs state funds to each county and provides for local arts and cultural resources, the national Poetry Out Loud recitation competition for high school students, local arts and cultural grants, and partnerships within the network of State-Local Partners.

About Annie Mack
ARTIST STATEMENT
I describe my work as Art Photography. Most of my productions are deconstruction and recontextualizing, as in abstraction and electronic collaging. I possess a few technical skills necessary for photojournalism and landscape shots, but I seek more personal expression and creativity rather than discovery and precise recording of a scene or moment. I enjoy found art, which serves as a springboard for imaginative composition and richer interpretation of the literal world of photo-making. I like to start with a recognizable image or collection, or a familiar idiom or axiom, and recreate and rearrange around it, with unexpected elements that freshen or discombobulate the central theme. My lenses (cameras and computers) are visionary tools and I embrace and employ them as such.
All the works enclosed are electronic collage, rather than tactile cut-and-pastes. Some contain original photographs of mine.
ARTIST BIO
Annie Mack is a photo artist and social activist. She is the author of Badass Pix with a Cheap-Ass Camera (2021, Cresting Wave Publishing), a treatise and portfolio of non-traditional and provocative uses of cameras and photographic images. In her previous life as a history teacher, she encouraged thousands of students and teachers to pursue social justice and create personal BadAssery. Her photography was a prizewinner in the 2015 Dave Brubeck Jazz Festival of the University of the Pacific and she has been a featured artist in several local galleries. She lives in northern California with her husband, son and their dog Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Jr.

Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine)

Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine)
A Respite for the Weary Time-Traveler.
Featuring a Rite of Ancient Intelligence Carried out by The Gardeners
Toward the Continued Improvement of the Human Specious
by Kara E-Walker
Kara Walker, born Stockton, CA, has long been recognized for her incisive examinations of the dynamics of power and the exploitation of race and sexuality. Her work leverages expressions of fantasy and humor to confront troubling histories and dominant narratives, repossessing control in the process. Inspired by a wide range of sources, from antique dolls to Octavia Butler’s novel Parable of the Sower, Walker’s new commission, Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine), considers the memorialization of trauma, the objectives of technology, and the possibilities of transforming the negative energies that plague contemporary society. Here, automatons trapped in a never-ending cycle of ritual and struggle are repositories of the human soul. They recall mechanized medieval icons that evidenced divinity, vitality, and the promise of faith. Situated within an energetically charged field of black obsidian from Mt. Konocti in Lake County — a volcanic glass with deep spiritual properties — Walker’s Gardeners evoke wonder, reflection, respite, and hope. Just past this prophetic vignette, the installation’s namesake, Fortuna, responds to each visitor with a choreographed gesture and a printed fortune fresh from her mouth — an offering of absolution and contemplation.
