The Elmwood Studio
The “Studio” was built as an addition to the homeowner’s residence somewhere around the 1990’s, and it became the center of creativity for the Artist in Residence. Family, friends and building contractors coordinated efforts to complete this project, culminating with a joyous celebration upon its completion.
The Studio consists of comfortable chairs to do research, and have a good conversation, a round table to enjoy a meal, and a spacious floor plan for work tables, equipment and materials. The Studio’s wrap around windows permits the sunshine to flow through and enhance this always busy and happy place.
Through the years this remarkable space has witnessed many transitions including ceramics, quilting, weaving, knitting, sewing, dyeing fabric, Origami, baskets, painting gourds, bird houses, rocks, and lately, creating mosaics. It also was home to a number of parties and celebrations, gatherings of interesting and like-minded people, family and friends who had come to visit the homeowners.
Most importantly, our artists enjoy the talks, laughter, sharing of information, reminiscing good times, discussing the latest family, local and world events. On some days, there has been dancing, singing, breaking bread together, and delighting in our good and healthy friendships.
Hope you enjoy the work of this creative group.

"Growth occurs when we discover how to remain authentically ourselves in the presence of potentially threatening things. Maturity is the possession of coping skills: we can take in our stride things that previously would have knocked us off course. We are less fragile, less easily shocked, and hence more capable of engaging with situations as they really are."

Paris the Pearl's Capital
We are all familiar with pearls. Sought-after since ancient times, they still inspire the great modern jewelers. But how many people know that they were at the heart of an intense trade between the Gulf and France from the late 19th to the mid-20th century? How many remember that they were at the center of the luxury industry and Parisian culture for decades?
Organized by L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts, the exhibition Paris, City of Pearls, from November 21st, 2024 until June 1st, 2025, recounts the forgotten history of this amazing artistic, commercial and human adventure.

We received the news of the passing of Jim Lewis, Professor of Painting and Calligraphy, who lived to the age of 93.
|
|
|
For those who may not have known Jim Lewis, read these words by Everett D. Wilson from his website.
Mr. Lewis was my one and only calligraphy teacher, he was one of the best instructors that I encountered in all my years in academia.
Shortly after my short stint in the military, I enrolled at San Joaquin Delta College in 1971. At the time I was more interested in drawing, printmaking and photography classes. I have to admit that I was a pretty poor student in his lettering class, also lazy with a bad attendance record. He should have failed me for my unremarkable efforts.
Mr. Lewis grew up in the Bakersfield area, and attended local schools. He began taking art classes at the College of the Pacific in Stockton, and then at grad school at Stanford University.
He had hundreds of students over the years; I can think of two that certainly grasped the lettering brush/Osmiroid pen and made a real name for themselves as gifted calligraphers; namely Dennis Droge and Rick Cusick. If there are others, I apologize here for my unfamiliarity.
For myself, this brief encounter with Mr. Lewis got me into many doors, especially in Hollywood. Lettering and calligraphy were incredible assets for me as I encountered a myriad of projects over the years.

The Jurors' Awards in Honor of Ruby Zahn White, established in 1988, are a prestigious recognition presented by the Stockton Art League. This endowed fund, generously provided by the family of Ruby Zahn White, honors her immense contribution to the art community. Ruby Zahn White (1899-1986) was a founding member of the Stockton Art League, an artist who played an integral role in shaping the Northern California art scene. These awards continue her legacy, fostering the growth and creativity of future generations of artists.
|
|
Ruby Zahn White (1899 - 1986)
During the 1930s a group of like-minded artists in Stockton would meet weekly at the Haggin Museum to draw. Their affinity grew and they decided to form an art club that could benefit the city and empower the growing artists of the area.
Ruby Zahn White was one of those founding artists of the Stockton Art League. She helped expand its presence and served as its president twice. She was happiest when she was painting and became a key figure in the Northern California art scene. She also was an active member of several other prestigious organizations, including the Society of Western Artists and the American Pen Women. And in 1977, Ruby's significant impact on the arts was recognized by the Stockton Arts Commission, which honored her for her “outstanding contribution to the cultural life of the community”.
Born in San Jose, California, Ruby was destined for a life steeped in artistry and education. Her passion for the arts led her to the esteemed California School of Fine Arts (CSFA) and College of the Pacific, where she graduated with the class of 1921.
Ruby's early career saw her nurturing young minds at Analy Union High School in Sebastopol, CA, and later at her alma mater, the College of the Pacific. When the college moved to Stockton in 1925, Ruby followed, beginning a new chapter both professionally and personally as she married G. Warren White and eventually paused her teaching career to focus on raising a family.
The 1940s marked Ruby's return to her artistic roots. She resumed painting and took on an art teaching role at Stockton High School. Ruby's preferred mediums were oil and watercolor, and she had a particular talent for en plein air landscapes, capturing the essence of historical scenes. Her work was heavily influenced by the picturesque vistas of the Pacific Coast, the Mother Lode region, and the broader western states.
Ruby's talent and dedication earned her numerous exhibition opportunities. Some notable showcases include the Smithsonian Institution (1954, 1956), the California State Fair (1954, 1958, 1962), the Society of Western Artists, the Kingsley Art Club (1952, 1960), the Oakland Museum (1953), and the Springfield (MA) Museum (1961). Retrospectives of her work were held at the Haggin Museum, the Lodi Community Art Center, and the University of the Pacific.
Today, Ruby Zahn White's legacy lives on through her works, which are proudly displayed at the Haggin Museum in Stockton, the University of the Pacific, the Stockton Public Library, the Stockton Record, the Bank of Stockton, the Lodi Community Art Center, and in numerous
private collections.

Featuring approximately 40 modernist works from private and public collections, Mary Tuthill Lindheim: Kindred Responses to Life surveys Lindheim’s life and work in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Lindheim (1912 – 2004) studied sculpture with artists Alexander Archipenko and Isamu Noguchi in the 1930s, and pottery with Antonio Prieto in the 1940s. She went on to win prizes for her own pottery at regional and national craft shows. Disregarding preconceived distinctions between fine art and craft, Lindheim explored clay as an artistic medium and vital means of self-expression. The exhibition features her pottery, figurative sculpture, and studio jewelry. Through a series of thematic installations loosely inspired by the artist’s guiding beliefs in nature, emotion, beauty, and social justice, the works on display make connections between her artistic practice and compassionate approach to life.

Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine)
July 1, 2024–Spring 2026
Floor 1
(The public can access this exhibition for free in the Roberts Family Gallery on Floor 1)
Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine)
A Respite for the Weary Time-Traveler.
Featuring a Rite of Ancient Intelligence Carried out by The Gardeners
Toward the Continued Improvement of the Human Specious
by Kara E-Walker
Kara Walker, born Stockton, CA, has long been recognized for her incisive examinations of the dynamics of power and the exploitation of race and sexuality. Her work leverages expressions of fantasy and humor to confront troubling histories and dominant narratives, repossessing control in the process. Inspired by a wide range of sources, from antique dolls to Octavia Butler’s novel Parable of the Sower, Walker’s new commission, Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine), considers the memorialization of trauma, the objectives of technology, and the possibilities of transforming the negative energies that plague contemporary society. Here, automatons trapped in a never-ending cycle of ritual and struggle are repositories of the human soul. They recall mechanized medieval icons that evidenced divinity, vitality, and the promise of faith. Situated within an energetically charged field of black obsidian from Mt. Konocti in Lake County — a volcanic glass with deep spiritual properties — Walker’s Gardeners evoke wonder, reflection, respite, and hope. Just past this prophetic vignette, the installation’s namesake, Fortuna, responds to each visitor with a choreographed gesture and a printed fortune fresh from her mouth — an offering of absolution and contemplation.

Pier 24 Photography
The final Exhibition until January 2025
Pier 24 is one of the largest venues in the world dedicated to viewing photography. Since its inception it has always been free to view the comprehensive collection of more than 5,000 works by 500 photographers, all purchased by the Pilara Foundation.
The gallery space is nearly 27,000 square feet and attendance has always been by reservation and limited, to provide the viewer a serene experience while looking at the Pilara collection, along with other private collections on loan, like that of Bob and Randi Fisher.
The staff only mounts one exhibition per year, while also co-sponsoring the Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program, with the California College of the Arts. Pier 24 has also published 20 books on photography.
|
|
Excerpt: TURNING THE PAGE
As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. In its more than ten years, Pier 24 Photography has exhibited many thousands of photographs, and thus hundreds of thousands of hypothetical words. Up until now, every show has begun with the Pilara Foundation Collection and expanded from there. Turning the Page is the first exhibition that does not feature works from our collection. Instead, it looks at and celebrates the photobook, a medium that has undergone its own renaissance parallel to our years in operation. Each of the galleries presents works from a distinct photobook, whether an iconic volume or a recent monograph. The content, sequence, and design of each selected book guided our approach to that particular installation, aiming for a thoughtful translation of its overall tone and intent. Ultimately, Turning the Page invites you to consider how the viewing context impacts our understanding of a photographic project.
Among the classic works represented here are Robert Frank’s Les Américains (The Americans, 1958), Masahisa Fukase’s Karasu (Ravens, 1986), Larry Sultan’s Pictures from Home (1992), and Jim Goldberg’s Raised by Wolves (1995)—four photobooks that speak to the breadth of the medium across the second half of the twentieth century. Many consider The Americans so influential that every photobook since has been either in conversation with it or in rebellion against it. Ravens trades Frank’s restless questioning of the American dream for a dark, introspective processing of grief in the aftermath of Fukase’s divorce; both demonstrate how image sequencing can evoke feeling and narrative. Pictures from Home and Raised by Wolves build upon these precedents, combining image sequence, page layout, and text to tell powerful stories and reveal certain truths.
Over the past twenty years, photobooks have become increasingly essential to many photographers, offering a distinctive medium for fully realizing their visions—often pushing the boundaries of the book form along the way. This approach to design and layout extends to how several of the featured photographers have installed works from their projects. Few artists have explored the photobook’s range as extensively as Rinko Kawauchi, whose Ametsuchi (2013) unifies book design with her project’s concept and visual content; her lyrical installation echoes the sequence and design within her book’s pages. Vasantha Yogananthan’s A Myth of Two Souls (2016–21) is a series of seven individual yet related photobooks, one for each chapter of the Hindu epic the Ramayana, upon which the project is loosely based. The design of Rose Marie Cromwell’s El Libro Supremo de la Suerte (2018) is based on Cuban charadas—small photocopied pamphlets that guide people in placing bets in Havana’s underground lottery by assigning numbers to everyday objects; Cromwell’s nonlinear approach to image sequencing is also informed by this random system. And in Wires Crossed (2023), Ed Templeton documents two decades of his life as a professional skateboarder in a dense, frenetic sequence evoking the look and feel of the skate world he helped create. These four photographers have conceived unique installations for Turning the Page that speak to the kind of engaging experiences they are known for creating when translating their works from page to wall.
Pier 24 Photography has long believed in the photobook as an essential vehicle for both discovering new and exciting photographers, and looking deeply at the history of the medium. Additionally, we have contributed to the photobook community with our own publishing program. As with all of our shows, we hope you will see both familiar works that call out to you as old friends might, and unfamiliar photographers for you to encounter. It is this eye toward the future, with a humble respect for the past, that unifies the work on display. We hope you will join us as we turn the page together.
Viewer discretion advised for this exhibition as some galleries display themes of drug use and sexual abuse.
