Artist of the Month: Kevin Richtik

The Stockton Art League is proud to present April’s Artist of the Month, Kevin Richtik, a longtime Stockton photographer whose work captures both the beauty of everyday life and the richness of place.
A graduate of Brooks Institute of Photography, Kevin is the owner of Caroline Photography, a Stockton-based studio with a legacy spanning decades. He began there in 1986 as a wedding assistant to founder Caroline Beebe and became owner in 2010, continuing a tradition of excellence in portrait and commercial photography. Over the years, Kevin has photographed thousands of local families and collaborated with regional and national companies. His work has appeared in numerous publications, and Kodak has featured his imagery in worldwide advertising campaigns. Caroline Photography has also been recognized as a Best of San Joaquin winner more than thirty times.
Beyond his professional studio practice, Kevin’s fine art photography reveals a deep sensitivity to light, composition, and narrative. His images range from sweeping landscapes of the San Joaquin Valley and beyond, to intimate still lifes and architectural studies—each reflecting a thoughtful eye and a commitment to visual storytelling.
Kevin is also the creator of the ongoing Beauty of Stockton photo project, a widely followed weekly series that highlights the city’s overlooked and celebrated spaces alike. Reaching tens of thousands of viewers, the project continues to reshape perceptions of Stockton by sharing its vibrancy, character, and sense of place.

Words in Practice
As we move further into spring, this month brings steady progress alongside a full schedule of programs and events.
The Stockton Art League is currently in the final phase of preparing our State Local Partner application, with the May 12 deadline approaching. This process has involved continued research, planning, and conversations around what a countywide arts support structure could look like for San Joaquin County. In mid-April, we will be attending the State Local Partner convening, where we will connect with arts councils from across California, learn more about how they are approaching this work in their own regions, and gather insight to help inform our next steps.
This month features our Artist of the Month, Kevin Richtik. His work documents local and regional spaces through a focus on light, composition, and everyday surroundings.
In recognition of National Poetry Month, we are also thinking about the role of language as a creative practice. Expression often begins with words. How we shape them, revise them, and respond to them over time gives them greater meaning. In this way, we are all writers and poets, building a kind of portfolio through our thoughts, notes, and everyday language.
Words carry weight. While actions may speak louder, words offer a form of permanence. They can document, clarify, and serve as a record of intention. Poetry moves across a page much like a brush moves across a canvas, forming rhythm, pauses, and composition. When you step back, the experience comes into view as a whole.
This month also marks the birthday of Elsie May Goodwin on April 19, whose legacy continues to support the gallery and its ongoing work. It is a moment to reflect on the history of this space and the individuals who have contributed to its presence in the community.
We also remember Jackie Podesta. It is impossible to fully summarize her impact in a single paragraph. She was a kind and generous presence, a supporter of her community and fellow artists, and a champion of youth art. I will miss our conversations in the gallery and remember with fondness the times she brought me herbs from her garden. She had a love of cerulean blue and was deeply committed to helping others lead healthy lives through clean, whole foods. Her presence, care, and contributions will continue to be felt across the community.
Stockton Art League will be participating in Earth Day at Victory Park, bringing cyanotype activities into the community, and continuing to offer accessible, hands-on ways to engage with art through light, process, and observation.
Looking ahead, we are opening opportunities for artists and makers to participate in our Spring Market in May. We encourage those interested in sharing their work to apply and take part in the event.

February 22, 1940 - January 8, 2026
Jacqueline Louise Podesta joined her husband, Mario Podesta, her beloved husband of 52 years on Thursday, January 8, 2026. .. just 1 month shy of her 86th birthday. She is survived by her daughter Marla Podesta, Kevin Hernandez who was like another son to her, her son Craig Podesta, daughter Carol Kerney, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Throughout her life, Jackie was a long-standing member of the Lodi Community Art Center since 1996 as well as program and demonstration chairperson for 3 years. She also helped in the selection of judges for the Lodi Art Annual for many years. In addition, Jackie served as the organizer for demonstrations for the Stockton Art League for over 17 years, served on their committees, and brought in portfolio previews for high school students for at least 10 years.
Jackie was also involved and contributed to many organizations including but not limited to Haute Couture, Junior League, Stockton Symphony, Haggin Museum, St. Joseph’s Hospital/Cardiac Rehab, American Cancer Society, and San Joaquin County Sheriff’s K-9 protective vests.
Jackie was always well-known for her love of cooking, design and home decor, her art work, and especially her infamous yard which was always bursting with beautiful, colorful blooms which provided her and others many years of enjoyment and served as a source of pride for her.
Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of San Joaquin, American Heart Association, Stockton Art League, or any of the aforementioned organizations that she was so passionate about.
Keep an eye out yet for Jackie’s artwork as “the sky is the ultimate art gallery just above us” and there are no limits to what she will create.

Join us for our Spring Market at the Goodwin Gallery on Saturday, May 23 from 12–4 PM, featuring local artists, makers, and creatives from across our community.
This indoor/outdoor market offers a great opportunity to share your work, connect with new audiences, and be part of a vibrant day at the gallery. Space is limited and will be filled on a first come, first served, based on payment.
Vendor applications are open through May 13. Once your application is submitted, an invoice will be sent to reserve your space. Please note that registration is only confirmed once payment is received.
We have 15 indoor vendor spots available, along with 2 outdoor BYO table spaces. A limited number of tables are available to rent through the gallery, and chairs will be provided—just bring your work and set up.
Setup begins at 11 AM, and vendors are expected to remain set up through the duration of the event. Breakdown will begin after 4 PM and must be completed by 5 PM.

We’re excited to announce the upcoming 63rd Annual National Juried Exhibition at the Haggin Museum, one of the Stockton Art League’s longest-running and most anticipated exhibitions.

Join us for a Youth Black Out Poetry Workshop on April 18, designed for young adults ages 13–24. This hands-on session explores the art of creating poetry by redacting words from existing text to reveal new meaning and voice.
Whether you’re new to poetry or already writing, this workshop offers a welcoming space to experiment, reflect, and create. All materials will be provided—just bring your curiosity and creativity.

While the sun comes out to brighten our day, join us for Cyano Saturdays and explore the magic of creating prints using sunlight and natural materials.
Participants will create unique prints using local foliage while learning a historic photographic process.
This relaxed, 20–30 minute activity is perfect for all ages and experience levels—whether you’re trying it for the first time or returning to experiment further. All materials are provided, and participants can create multiple prints to take home.
Drop in on select Saturdays throughout the season and enjoy a creative, accessible way to engage with art, light, and nature at the Goodwin Gallery.

Join us again for Open Studio at the Goodwin Gallery every Thursday from 10 AM–12 PM. This informal drop-in session is a space to meet, make, and connect with fellow artists and community members.
Bring your own project and work alongside others in a relaxed, supportive environment. All media are welcome; however, we ask that participants use low-odor materials only to ensure a comfortable shared workspace. Whether you’re continuing a piece, experimenting with new ideas, or simply seeking creative company, Open Studio offers time and space to create.

California Arts Council Grants Now Open
|

The California Arts Council has opened applications for its 2026 grant cycle, offering funding opportunities for artists, nonprofit organizations, youth programs, and community-based cultural initiatives across California.
As part of our State Local Partner mentorship, the Stockton Art League is helping share information and encourage participation from across San Joaquin County. These grants are designed to support both established organizations and first-time applicants, with priority given to small organizations and communities that have not historically had access to state funding.

As part of our State Local Partner mentorship, we are building capacity to support San Joaquin County through shared information, guidance, and connections. While we are not a grantmaker, we can help point you to resources, clarify guidelines, and offer general insight into the application process.

Attention San Joaquin County: We know surveys can feel repetitive
Two years ago, we gathered input as Stockton Art League began the State–Local Partner mentorship. Since then, we’ve expanded county outreach, strengthened partnerships, and entered Year 3 of the mentorship process.
Now we’re asking for updated input.
This 10-minute survey focuses on infrastructure and priorities for capacity, not specific programs or events. It’s about what needs to be built, strengthened, or sustained to support arts across the county.

This effort is not limited to Stockton Art League members. We welcome submissions from and about all artists in the region, regardless of affiliation. This includes artists working in visual arts, music, literature, performance, film, design, dance, and beyond.

Join the San Joaquin Arts Advisory Committee!
We’re seeking 8–12 volunteer community members to represent the five districts of San Joaquin County and help guide the growth of arts access and equity across our region.
This advisory group will support the Stockton Art League in its role as a State-Local Partner (SLP) mentee, a program of the California Arts Council. As a mentee organization, we are working to strengthen the county’s arts network, gather community input, and build a foundation for future countywide arts leadership.
Committee members will share local perspectives, identify arts needs, and collaborate on ways to connect artists, organizations, and communities through inclusive, creative opportunities.

Strengthening the Arts Through Collaboration
The Stockton Art League (SAL) has long been dedicated to enriching the arts in our community. We are excited to share recent developments that mark a significant step forward in regional arts advocacy and infrastructure building.
As part of California’s State-Local Partner (SLP) initiative, the Stockton Art League is currently serving as a mentee to Amador Arts, with the goal of becoming the official State and Local Partner for San Joaquin County. This mentorship is part of a statewide effort by the California Arts Council to strengthen arts ecosystems across every county and build sustainable support for artists and cultural organizations.

ArtLit on the Mile transforms the Miracle Mile into an open-air gallery and literary walk, connecting writers, artists, musicians, and small businesses in one shared experience. The whole district becomes the venue, encouraging people to wander, discover, and connect with the Mile in new ways. It brings foot traffic to local merchants, visibility to creatives, and something positive for the community to gather around.

- Artists, authors, musicians, and performers living or working in San Joaquin County
- Individual artists or collaborative groups
- Emerging, mid-career, and established creatives
- Nonprofit organizations whose mission includes support for arts and/or literature

From May 10, 1942 until October 17, 1942 thousands of local Japanese Americans were held at the Stockton Assembly Center located at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds.
Join us Saturday, May 9th, from 2 PM - 4 PM for a day of remembrance and reflection. The program includes a guided tour, brief remarks, and light refreshments.
This event is hosted by Okagesama, a local group dedicated to preserving this historical site and working to build the Japanese American Interpretive Center.

The Department of Art, Media, Performance & Design invites you to experience Echoes in Creation, an exhibition exploring the ripple effects of ideas, inspiration, and artistic expression. Opening on April 7 in the Reynolds Gallery and the Art Building’s hallway, the exhibition showcases student work across a diverse range of media. Join us for a reception on Thursday, April 9, 6—8 PM.
Echoes in Creation isn’t just a title—it’s a reflection. Every piece carries a trace of something that came before: a memory, a movement, a moment of inspiration that resonates in the present. Follow the echoes as they unfold, revealing how past impressions transform into living, evolving expressions.
This exhibition highlights the creative voices of students in both graphic design and studio arts through:
● Visual storytelling: Works that layer meaning through image, form, and composition.
● Experimental design: Projects that push boundaries across digital and physical media.
● Conceptual exploration: Pieces that reflect identity, culture, and personal narrative.
● Immersive experiences: Installations that invite interaction and deeper engagement.
● Sculptural and material studies: Forms that transform space and perception.
The artists featured are Graphic Design Seniors: Manuel Barrientos, Lucas Campainha, Aruelle Fernandez, Molly Keighran, and Sharan Satish as well as Studio Arts Seniors: Melary Alcazar, Hyunsoo Kim, Mahnoor Mahmood, and Maria Marquez. Interdisciplinary work of Junior Graphic Design, Studio Art and MPRO majors is displayed in the Art Building lobby. These students are Nico Blum, Alexa Carranza Mendez, Erik Guerrero-Rodriguez, Mikayla Henry, Gia Hung Tran, Noah Valdez, Quoc Hung Vu, and Jhih-Ci Wang.
The show will be on view from April 7 — May 7, 2026 in the Reynolds Gallery, Jeannette Powell Art Center, University of the Pacific. Admission is always free. The gallery is open Monday — Friday from 9:00 AM — 4:30 PM. Parking is available on the street at 1071 Mendocino Ave, Stockton, CA 95211. University of the Pacific's Conservatory of Music presents a Pacific Opera Theatre's production of Gian Carlo Menotti's "The Medium." This opera tells the story of a fraudulent fortune teller Madame Flora who begins to believe that the spirits she claims to contact are actually real, causing her to spiral into confusion and madness.
The main feature will be preceded by Samuel Barber's “A Hand of Bridge”—possibly the shortest one-act opera that is regularly performed (about nine minutes long).

95th Annual Robert T. McKee Student Art Exhibition
January 29, 2026 - March 15, 2026
Join us for the nation’s longest-running museum-sponsored student art exhibition, proudly showcasing the creative talents of young artists from kindergarten through 12th grade. This cherished tradition was founded by patron Robert T. McKee, who believed in inspiring students by offering them a public platform to share their artwork.
Each year, all schools in San Joaquin County—including public, private, charter, parochial, and home schools—are invited to participate. On average, the Haggin Museum receives over 1,000 pieces of student artwork, hand-selected by teachers as the best from their classes.
The Museum’s temporary galleries come alive with vibrant two- and three-dimensional works created using a variety of media, including crayon, colored pencil, pastel, watercolor, oil and acrylic paint, photography, and more.

Join us on Monday, April 27 at 5:30pm in the Julia Harrison Micke Memorial Building for the spring meeting of the San Joaquin County Historical Society & Museum membership. To coincide with the United Nations declaring 2026 as International Year of the Woman Farmer, the evening will be a celebration of women in agriculture.
Featured speakers will be Kamal Bagri, San Joaquin County Agricultural Commissioner and Dr. Michelle Leinfelder-Miles, Director and Delta Crops Resource Management Advisor for the UC Cooperative Extension in San Joaquin County. A fresh and delicious locally inspired dinner by Peachy’s Food to Go will include seasonal grilled vegetables with balsamic glaze, lemon herb roasted chicken, garlic and herb pasta salad, and strawberry shortcake.
In addition, the Lodi Winegrape Commission will highlight woman growers and winemakers in the region with a curated informational wine tasting bar hosted by Commission chair Jacylyn Stokes Iniguez and Dr. Stephanie Bolton, Director of Grower Research, Education, and the Lodi Rules Sustainable Winegrowing program.

Kara Walker, born Stockton, CA, has long been recognized for her incisive examinations of the dynamics of power and the exploitation of race and sexuality. Her work leverages expressions of fantasy and humor to confront troubling histories and dominant narratives, repossessing control in the process. Inspired by a wide range of sources, from antique dolls to Octavia Butler’s novel Parable of the Sower, Walker’s new commission, Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine), considers the memorialization of trauma, the objectives of technology, and the possibilities of transforming the negative energies that plague contemporary society. Here, automatons trapped in a never-ending cycle of ritual and struggle are repositories of the human soul. They recall mechanized medieval icons that evidenced divinity, vitality, and the promise of faith. Situated within an energetically charged field of black obsidian from Mt. Konocti in Lake County — a volcanic glass with deep spiritual properties — Walker’s Gardeners evoke wonder, reflection, respite, and hope. Just past this prophetic vignette, the installation’s namesake, Fortuna, responds to each visitor with a choreographed gesture and a printed fortune fresh from her mouth — an offering of absolution and contemplation.

FREE SKILLSHARES WITH SIDE STREET PROJECTS
The “FREE Skillshares with Side Street Projects” series occurs every second Saturday of the month at our organization's headquarters. It is open to all ages, and skill levels. Each session is led by a community-based Teaching Artist who guides participants in learning hard and soft art skills.
Teaching Artists are asked to create a “toolkit” for participants and for those who could not attend the event to use at home as a DIY (Do-it-yourself) or DIT (Do-it-together) resource. These toolkits are generally documents, videos, zines, or podcasts.
Our goal is to offer free learning opportunities that empower the community to expand their creative endeavors. We think it is important we provide accessible art to a range of experiences and learning capacities.
