The Stockton Art League is pleased to present Geneva Mello as our July Artist of the Month in the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery.
Geneva Mello has deep roots in California's Central Valley and continues to live and work near her hometown of Lodi. She earned a BFA in Studio Art from the University of the Pacific and an MA in Art with honors from California State University, Fresno, in 2010.
Working from found photographs and personal archives, Geneva creates paintings and drawings that explore myth, archetype, dream imagery, and nostalgia. Her Central Valley heritage informs much of her subject matter, appearing through references to agriculture, the regional landscape, and intimate portrayals of family history.
Beyond her studio practice, Geneva is an active advocate for the arts in her community. She serves as Chair of the Lodi Arts Commission, Youth Services Chair for the Lodi Rotary Club, a teaching artist with the San Joaquin County Office of Education's Artists in Schools program, and a lead organizer of the Lodi Open Studios Tour.

Midway
July has always felt like an interesting place in the calendar. We are far enough into the year to look back with some clarity, but still have enough time to change direction if we choose. It is a natural midpoint for reflection, not simply on what we've accomplished, but on where our attention is leading us next.
Many of us begin the year waiting for things to settle down. We tell ourselves we'll begin once work slows, once the weather changes, or once we have more time. The truth is, life rarely pauses long enough to give us permission. At some point, we stop waiting for the world to become quieter and instead respond to the moment we are already in.
The next step is not always the one we imagined in January. It may feel uncertain, unconventional, or even risky. Sometimes the path ahead is simply unknown. Yet some of the most meaningful journeys begin that way.
Water rarely follows a straight line. Over time, it can carve new paths through rock, and it can also smooth sharp edges. Years later, it becomes difficult to imagine the river ever flowed another direction. Creative practice often asks the same of us. We gradually carve new paths through our work, and in return, our work shapes us. Looking back, what once felt uncertain often becomes the path we can no longer imagine not taking.
This month we are pleased to feature Geneva Mello as our Artist of the Month. Working from found photographs and personal archives, Geneva's paintings and drawings explore memory, mythology, and the quiet pull of nostalgia. Her work reminds us that looking backward is not about remaining in the past. It is often through memory that we better understand the present and imagine what comes next.
We also have some exciting news to share. The Stockton Art League has received a grant from the Antone E. & Marie F. Raymus Foundation to establish a Digital Art Resource Lab. Beginning this fall, we'll be offering workshops that explore digital art, creative technology, and new ways of making, creating opportunities for learners of all ages to experiment, create, and grow. We're grateful to the Foundation for helping us bring this new resource to our community.
While we're looking ahead, we're equally committed to preserving traditional art forms. This month, Kat Castaneda will lead a Sashiko workshop, exploring the Japanese tradition of decorative mending and repair. Whether you're repairing something meaningful or creating something entirely new, it's a reminder that creativity often grows through patience, care, and small, intentional steps.
July also brings anticipation for one of the Stockton Art League's longest-running traditions, the 63rd Annual National Juried Exhibition at the Haggin Museum. Preparing work for a juried exhibition asks artists to pause, reflect, and decide what best represents where they are in their practice today. If you've been considering submitting your work, I encourage you to take that chance before the July 19 deadline.
You'll also notice a new feature in this month's Collagraph: Member Spotlight: Beyond the Goodwin Gallery. Our members are exhibiting, teaching, publishing, performing, and contributing to creative communities in so many ways, and we'd like to celebrate those accomplishments. If you have an upcoming exhibition, a recent show, or another creative milestone, I hope you'll share it with us. It's one more way we can recognize the work our members are doing and help connect our creative community.
As we move into the second half of the year, I hope you find time to reflect on the path you've been carving. Some plans may have changed. Some edges may have softened. There is still much left to discover, but perhaps this is the moment to stop waiting and begin responding. The direction ahead may still be unknown, but that has always been part of the creative journey.

We’re excited to announce the upcoming 63rd Annual National Juried Exhibition at the Haggin Museum, one of the Stockton Art League’s longest-running and most anticipated exhibitions.
This national call invites artists from across the country to submit work for consideration in a juried exhibition held in partnership with the Haggin Museum.
Best in Show: $1,000 Ruby Zahn White Award

Volunteers Needed: Gesso Party!

Help us prepare canvases for future Stockton Art League programs while supporting our Youth Art Program!
We're looking for volunteers to join us for a community Gesso Party, where we'll prime a bulk supply of canvases that will later be sold as affordable painting surfaces for local artists. Proceeds from canvas sales directly benefit the Stockton Art League's Youth Art Program.
Whether you're an artist looking for an inexpensive canvas, enjoy lending a hand, or simply want to spend an afternoon with fellow creatives, we'd love to have you join us. No experience is necessary.

Sashiko Embroidery Workshop
Friday, July 24 | 5:30–7:30 PM
Discover the art of Sashiko, a traditional Japanese embroidery technique whose name translates to "little stabs." Originally developed as a practical method for reinforcing, mending, and insulating worn clothing, Sashiko transforms simple running stitches into beautiful geometric patterns that celebrate both craftsmanship and repair.
Join us for an evening of learning this timeless textile tradition while creating your own stitched piece. Whether you're interested in visible mending, textile arts, or simply trying something new, this beginner-friendly workshop offers a relaxing introduction to one of Japan's most enduring folk art practices.
This workshop is presented in part through the support of a City of Stockton Arts Commission grant, helping expand access to arts and cultural programming in our community.

One of the greatest strengths of the Stockton Art League is our members. Every month, artists from our community exhibit in galleries, museums, libraries, businesses, art fairs, and public spaces throughout California and beyond. We believe these accomplishments deserve to be celebrated.
This section recognizes Stockton Art League members who have been invited to exhibit, received awards, completed public art projects, participated in juried exhibitions, led workshops, published work, or reached other creative milestones outside of the Goodwin Gallery.
By sharing these achievements, we not only celebrate individual artists but also highlight the growing impact of Stockton Art League members within the broader arts community.

Member Spotlight: Beth Brampton
Congratulations to Stockton Art League member Beth Brampton on her upcoming solo exhibition at the Double Dip Gallery in Lodi.
Beth's newest body of work features a collection of intimate mixed-media landscapes created with art tissue paper, acrylic paint, and pen. What began as playful experimentation evolved into a series of small, imagined places filled with quiet stories and a sense of discovery. The whimsical compositions invite viewers to slow down, explore, and create their own narratives within each landscape.

Youth Art Program: July 4-Week Series
Saturdays: July 11, 18, 25 & August 1
Join the Stockton Art League's Youth Art Program for a four-week summer series designed to encourage creativity, exploration, and hands-on artmaking. Young artists will learn from local teaching artists while experimenting with a variety of materials, techniques, and creative projects in a fun and supportive environment.
Classes are divided by age group to provide age-appropriate instruction and opportunities for artistic growth. The class itinerary will be announced soon.

Join us again for Open Studio at the Goodwin Gallery every Thursday from 10 AM–12 PM. This informal drop-in session is a space to meet, make, and connect with fellow artists and community members.
Bring your own project and work alongside others in a relaxed, supportive environment. All media are welcome; however, we ask that participants use low-odor materials only to ensure a comfortable shared workspace. Whether you’re continuing a piece, experimenting with new ideas, or simply seeking creative company, Open Studio offers time and space to create.

Stay Connected: California Arts Council Meetings
The California Arts Council (CAC) holds public Council meetings throughout the year to discuss statewide arts policy, funding priorities, grant programs, and initiatives that shape California's creative landscape. These meetings are open to the public and provide an opportunity for artists, arts organizations, educators, and community members to learn more about how arts policy is developed and to participate in the public process.
Whether you're interested in grant opportunities, statewide arts advocacy, or simply want to better understand how California supports arts and culture, Council meetings offer valuable insight into the decisions that impact artists and communities across all 58 counties. Meetings are offered in a hybrid format whenever possible, allowing participants to attend in person or virtually. Public comment is welcomed both during meetings and through written submissions.
Meeting agendas, packets, recordings, approved minutes, and upcoming meeting dates are posted on the California Arts Council website.

As part of our State Local Partner mentorship, we are building capacity to support San Joaquin County through shared information, guidance, and connections. While we are not a grantmaker, we can help point you to resources, clarify guidelines, and offer general insight into the application process.
We are also available to support grant writing on a percentage basis for funded proposals. If you have questions about fiscal sponsorship, eligibility, or how to structure an application, we are happy to help guide those conversations.

Attention San Joaquin County: We know surveys can feel repetitive
Two years ago, we gathered input as Stockton Art League began the State–Local Partner mentorship. Since then, we’ve expanded county outreach, strengthened partnerships, and entered Year 3 of the mentorship process.
Now we’re asking for updated input.
This 10-minute survey focuses on infrastructure and priorities for capacity, not specific programs or events. It’s about what needs to be built, strengthened, or sustained to support arts across the county.

Join the San Joaquin Arts Advisory Committee!
We’re seeking 8–12 volunteer community members to represent the five districts of San Joaquin County and help guide the growth of arts access and equity across our region.
This advisory group will support the Stockton Art League in its role as a State-Local Partner (SLP) mentee, a program of the California Arts Council. Strengthening the Arts Through Collaboration
The Stockton Art League (SAL) has long been dedicated to enriching the arts in our community. We are excited to share recent developments that mark a significant step forward in regional arts advocacy and infrastructure building.
As part of California’s State-Local Partner (SLP) initiative, the Stockton Art League is currently serving as a mentee to Amador Arts, with the goal of becoming the official State and Local Partner for San Joaquin County. This mentorship is part of a statewide effort led by the California Arts Council to strengthen arts ecosystems across every county and build sustainable support for artists and cultural organizations.
On April 19, 2026, SAL participated in the State-Local Partner Convening with the Coalition of County Arts Agencies, joining representatives from across California to collaborate on shared priorities and strategies. Discussions focused on key areas including arts education advocacy, the creative economy, data collection, equitable grantmaking, fundraising, infrastructure, and the role of emerging tools like AI in the arts .
This convening reinforced the importance of cross-county collaboration and highlighted the role of State-Local Partners as connectors between local communities and statewide resources. Through this growing network, SAL continues to build relationships, gather data, and align its work to better serve artists and organizations throughout San Joaquin County.
The Stockton Art League will be applying for the 2026-2028 State-Local Partner grant through the California Arts Council with the support of the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors, a key step toward formal designation as the county’s official arts agency.
These efforts are part of a larger statewide framework designed to support cultural development through funding, technical assistance, and coordinated leadership between counties and the state. As we move forward, we remain committed to strengthening regional partnerships, expanding access, and advocating for a more connected and sustainable arts ecosystem.

Building a Central Valley Network
As a direct result of this convening, we were able to connect with neighboring State-Local Partner representatives across the Central Valley. These conversations have already led to plans for more regular meetings between counties to strengthen coordination, share resources, and support regional advocacy efforts.

2026 Lodi Sandhill Crane Festival Art Show
The Lodi Sandhill Crane Association is now accepting entries for the 2026 Lodi Sandhill Crane Festival Art Show, celebrating California's wildlife through fine art and photography. Selected artwork will be exhibited at Hutchins Street Square during the annual festival, November 6–8, 2026.
Artists of all ages are invited to submit original artwork featuring Sandhill Cranes in California or other California wildlife in their natural habitats. Eligible media include painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, and photography. AI-generated artwork and computer-generated imagery are not eligible.
Application Period: September 1 – October 1, 2026
Entry Fee: $10 per artwork (non-refundable)
Sales Commission: Artists receive 75% of sales; 25% supports the Lodi Sandhill Crane Association.
Professional judges will award prizes in both the Fine Art and Photography divisions, and festival visitors will vote for the People's Choice Award.

Opportunity for Teaching Artists
The Lodi Arts Foundation, in partnership with Lodi Adopt-A-Child and the Community Partnership for Families of San Joaquin (CPFSJ), is seeking professional teaching artists to lead a one-day youth art workshop this summer.
Selected artists will guide students ages 8–18 in creating original artwork inspired by the theme "Imagine if you had a Superpower." Artwork created during the workshops will be featured in the Lodi Adopt-A-Child Art Show in August 2026.

- Saturday, July 25 | 10:00 AM–12:00 PM (if additional workshop is needed)

Teaching artists will develop and lead an engaging, age-appropriate lesson while working alongside volunteers and partner organizations. Art supplies are provided by the Lodi Arts Foundation.
Compensation: $200 (approximately 4–5 hours)
Ideal applicants have experience teaching or mentoring youth, professional experience in their artistic discipline, and a passion for arts education. Spanish language skills are a plus.

This July exhibit features the work of our Wednesday Night Drawing Group, which consists of approximately 20 to 30 artists. This is a group of local artists that meet weekly with the focus of improving their skills. Wednesday Night Drawing consists of educational guided demos followed by live models posing for the group.

FREE SKILLSHARES WITH SIDE STREET PROJECTS
The “FREE Skillshares with Side Street Projects” series occurs every second Saturday of the month at our organization's headquarters. It is open to all ages, and skill levels. Each session is led by a community-based Teaching Artist who guides participants in learning hard and soft art skills.
Teaching Artists are asked to create a “toolkit” for participants and for those who could not attend the event to use at home as a DIY (Do-it-yourself) or DIT (Do-it-together) resource. These toolkits are generally documents, videos, zines, or podcasts.
Our goal is to offer free learning opportunities that empower the community to expand their creative endeavors. We think it is important we provide accessible art to a range of experiences and learning capacities.
