San Joaquin Potters Guild
A non-profit organization, the San Joaquin Potters Guild was founded in 1991 by a small group of clay artists who were interested in the camaraderie and inspiration that could be gained by association with other ceramic artists. Over the years the guild has grown and now includes glass artists.
A friendly, diverse and active group, the San Joaquin Potters Guild is committed to maintaining high standards of craftsmanship and design in clay and glass. The organization encourages innovation and profession growth in technical skills and aesthetics, promotes public appreciation and understanding of ceramic and glass art and provides a medium for exchange of ideas and concerns within the field.
The members of the San Joaquin Potters Guild represents artists in Northern and Central California.

May brings flowers, sunshine, ceramics and glass!
As the season warms up the Mile starts to come alive with new visitors and bicycle riders. Stop by to see the Goodwin Gallery filled with vessels, pottery, and glass by the San Joaquin Potters Guild for the month of May.
A few things to note for this month. May is the calm and preparation period for the busy summer activities: youth art classes, artist workshops, and Miracle Mile hosted events. It is great to collaborate with arts organizations with the same passions to bring learning and opportunities to the community. Stay tuned for more collaboration events as we find ways to partner with other Stockton members.
Kat and I have been rearranging the classroom area to make room for the next season of SAL classes. We have several workshops lined up for the summer. See the rest of our newsletter for more information.
I will be taking a short hiatus during the month of June to teach in summer but leave the gallery in good hands with Kat. I will still be available by email.

Intermediate/Advanced Watercolor Workshop with Tony Segale at the Goodwin Gallery for intermediate and advanced level. There will be a one-hour lunch break. Bring your lunch or explore the many food options on the Miracle Mile.

Saturday June 10th 10am-2pm
Scratchboard Workshop with Caroline Henry at the Goodwin Gallery for all levels. Finish the afternoon with two scratchboard drawings and an abundance of knowledge about the scratchboard process.
Schedule:
Part I (90mins) 10am-11:30am
- Create an animal portrait from a traced photo. 5x5 square. Students may bring a photo of a pet or wild animal or use an animal photo from my collection.
11:30am Break for Lunch
- Bring your lunch or explore the many food options on the Miracle Mile.
Part II (90mins) 12:30pm - 2:00pm
- Create a Still Life from a small still life setup
- Skills taught: how to use various scratch board tools. use of white carbon paper and with scratchboard, types of scratchboard surfaces, showing fur or feathers, deciding on and creative backgrounds, techniques such as cross-hatching that are the same in ink drawing and scratchboard, creating your own drawing directly on scratchboard as a step beyond tracing a photo or drawing. 5x5 Square

Our teachers and Stockton Art League members will be running a booth celebrating Earth Day. We will be showing our students’ work done during this March set of classes, and we will be providing fun art projects for everyone to create that day.

July Artists of the Month at the Goodwin Gallery
We will be matting and hanging our students’ best work for display during the month of July. As mentioned previously, keep your work in a portfolio, so we can choose the best ones from each student to put up on the wall.
The tentative reception date is July 29 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
We typically serve refreshments, and the reception is open to all.

The ArtSplash returns to begin its 9th season on May 12, 5 - 8 pm. The last ArtSplash took place in October 2019 and was suspended due to covid. Visit the Fanhs Filipino Museum at 337 E. Making Your Mark: Prints and Drawings from the Hechinger Collection brings together a rich array of works on paper, breaking down the various methods and materials used in modern artistic practice. Showcasing 50 superb prints and drawings, this exhibition samples the breadth and beauty of International Arts & Artists’ own Hechinger Collection, which has the unique theme of hand tools and hardware.

“Lenses” explores how five photographers visualize five different subjects when given the same space, looks and time. What elements of style can we bring in during and in post production that make an image our own? Lenses celebrates creative aesthetic, artistic differences and brings together a breadth of talent in both modeling and photography levels from around the region. Through My Father’s Eyes: The Filipino American Photographs of Ricardo Ocreto Alvarado is a collection of 50 photographs chosen from more than 3,000 discovered by his daughter, Janet Alvarado after his death. This exhibit offers a rare view into the daily lives of Filipino Americans in the post-World War II era.

n reaction to the widespread pursuit of Abstract Expressionism in the late 1940s and early 1950s, several avant-garde artists in the San Francisco Bay Area began to reengage with the visible world, applying the gestural style of action painting to depictions of people, landscapes, and still lifes.

Amidst the political and social upheaval at the beginning of the 20th century, German and Austrian artists turned to stark, almost brutal imagery to create a new kind of art. Figural distortion, flattened perspective, and straightforward technique served to express their feelings and thoughts in visual form. Ranging from perceptive self-portraits to biting social critiques, this exhibition explores the subjects and styles of Expressionist artists, including Max Beckmann, Georg Grosz, and Käthe Kollwitz.

Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence

|
American artist Kehinde Wiley’s new body of paintings and sculptures confronts the silence surrounding systemic violence against Black people through the visual language of the fallen figure. It expands on his 2008 series, Down — a group of large-scale portraits of young Black men inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s The Dead Christ in the Tomb (1521–1522). Wiley investigates the iconography of death and sacrifice in Western art, tracing it across religious, mythological, and historical subjects. In An Archaeology of Silence, the senseless deaths of men and women around the world are transformed into a powerful elegy of resistance. The resulting paintings of figures struck down, wounded, or dead, referencing iconic paintings of mythical heroes, martyrs, and saints, offer a haunting meditation on the legacies of colonialism and systemic racism.

Ansel Adams in Our Time

Looking forward and back, this exhibition of more than 100 works by photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams (1902 – 1984) places him in direct conversation with contemporary artists and the photographers who influenced him. Laid out in seven sections tracing Adams’s artistic development, the exhibition features some of his most-loved photographs, including images of Yosemite, San Francisco, and the American Southwest. Adams’s works are shown alongside prints by 19th-century landscape photographers, such as Carleton Watkins and Eadweard Muybridge, as well contemporary artists like Trevor Paglen, Will Wilson, and Catherine Opie. Their work engages anew with the sites and subjects that occupied Adams throughout his life — from national parks to the use and misuse of natural resources. Adams’s legacy continues to inspire and provoke, influencing how we envision the landscape and serving as an urgent call to preserve our environment.

Churches, coastlines, gardens, royal palaces, dancing — vibrant works by John Singer Sargent (1856 – 1925) immerse you in the rich culture of Spain. This exhibition, in its exclusive West coast stop, is the first to explore the influence of Spanish culture on Sargent’s dynamic visual practice. Celebrated as the society portraitist of his era, Sargent influenced a generation of American painters. His captivation with Spain, which developed over the course of seven visits taken from 1879 to 1912, resulted in a remarkable body of work. The exhibition presents an array of Sargent’s dazzling oils, watercolors, and drawings, along with never-before-exhibited photographs, showcasing Spain’s people, architecture, and magnificent urban and rural landscapes.
