Married couple, Vicki Gaia and Jim Melquist collaborate for the March art exhibit at the Stockton Art League’s Elsie May Goodwin Gallery. The theme of their show is SHAPES. For centuries, a variety of shapes have been part of human spiritual and religious symbolism. Natural and man-made forms are used by many cultures to represent diverse meanings. Melquist and Gaia’s sculptures are symbolic geometric forms evoking thoughts about our connections with the world around us. While Melquist uses technical processes learned from working as a materials engineer, Gaia calls herself an intuitive layerist, taking a more meditative approach to her work. Together they created 3-D art pieces from the same materials; plaster, rust and found objects gathered from their cousin’s vineyard. Artist Reception: Saturday, March 9, 4–7pm.

Two Day Workshop with Bobbie Baldwin
Color Mixing & Theory
For Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, & Pastel
April 6 & 7
9am-4pm
Participants will cover the elements of theory relating to mixing color according to how we see (scientifically) using the color wheel, lighting (and shadow) temperature. Participants will learn how color bounces and influences the subject, define the temperature of the color, paint from still life. We will also discuss the elements of shadow, color compliments, color transitions, and color terms.
$175 for Non-Members/ $157.50 for SAL Members

Space is limited, pre-register to guarantee your spot. Limit 10.
The session is for 3 hours, and models typically start with short quick poses and finish with longer poses. All artists must sign up in advance and be at least 18 years old. The session fee is $15, and artists must bring their own easel, drawing board, and materials.
Etiquette: Once the session begins, the gallery doors will be locked. Late arrivals are welcome, but they will be allowed access only during a break between poses. There is NO PHOTOGRAPHY OF MODELS allowed. Artists are encouraged to tip models and thank them at the end of the session. Conversations and music must be kept at a low level.

AAUW is soliciting original works of art for an art show to be held at Central United Methodist
Church, 3700 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, on Saturday, March 16, 2019. No submission fee required.
Artwork Eligibility: Artwork should present a visual expression of and reaction to issues of female empowerment, including but not limited to activism, education, pay equity, violence against women, sexual harassment, gender stereo-typing, intersectionality, non traditional roles and women’s leadership. Local, national and world perspectives, both historical and current, are all accepted.

Call for entries to all artists, students and galleries in Stockton and surrounding areas to submit up to four (4) original works each for display and purchase at the Stockton Opera Guild's April 13 fundraiser. There is NO entry fee or commission fee. Please note: If the number of entries exceeds display space, committee reserves the right to reduce the number of entries per artist.

Youth Art Program
Classes Start Saturday March 9th!

This program is funded in part by a grant sponsored by the Stockton Arts Commission.
Instruction will focus on the basics of drawing, including multiple media studies in value, perspective, composition, contour drawing, positive vs. negative space, and color theory. Students must sign up for the entire series, and the classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. There will be a waiting list in case of cancellations. Scholarships are available.
11-12:30 Class and 1-2:30 Class are full.
A reception for the students, parents and friends showcasing the students' artwork will be held on March 30, 4-5pm.
Mission Statement of the Stockton Art League Youth Art Program
To provide low cost, high quality art instruction to the youth of Stockton, and to instill in them an appreciation of the arts as an process in all endeavors, and a discovery of the power of creativity.

With the change in Gallery Hours, the required "Exhibiting Member" shifts will be 3.5 hour shifts (11am-2:30pm & 2:30pm-6pm). In addition, the 6 hours per month requirement has been changed to 3.5 hours per month (equal to 1 shift)

Open to the public and SAL members, Basic Concepts of drawing are vital to every visual artistic medium. Mora brings his 39 years of experience as artist, teacher, and judge to the Stockton community at the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery. Students will participate by practicing the basic concepts of contour drawing, sketching, and shading with black and white before going on to colored pencil.

Open to all artists (Stockton Art League members and non-member) with various media including pastels, acrylic, and oil. Painting and drawing is encouraged. Tuleburg Press is working to build literacy and writing confidence for all ages through book publishing, one-on-one mentoring, community outreach, and writing workshops.
Those activities occur at THE WRITE PLACE, a downtown Stockton creative writing and book arts center. Modeled after 826 Valencia in San Francisco, 916 Ink in Sacramento, and the San Francisco Center for the Book, THE WRITE PLACE teaches writing, bookbinding, and letterpress printing on vintage presses.
We see the center as a walking-distance friendly spot for students enrolled in the many downtown town schools, but it will offer creative writing and book arts workshops for writers of all ages.
Writing groups and book clubs will be able to use the space in the evenings. On weekends THE WRITE PLACE will host author readings and artists who teach paper making, book binding, and paper crafts of many kinds.
