About Doug Drendell
I was born in Stockton, CA and attended Stockton public schools. I have always been involved in art and graphics and was into drawing and painting at a very early age. This eventually led me to receive numerous awards for artistic pieces throughout grammar and high schools. I received awards by participating in events such as the children’s art show at the Haggin Museum and in high school one of my oil paintings was chosen to be sent to our “sister” high school in Chile as part of a permanent hanging from Lincoln High School as our part of our mutual exchange program. I was always in demand at “homecoming” time designing floats and different art needs for fellow students as we/they participated in the homecoming parade.
I attended college at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Ca where I studied commercial art and graduated with a BA in advertising/advertising design. I worked in the business printing industry for several years as a business print designer, art/advertising director and eventually vice-president of marketing and sales. With a heavy emphasis on advertising, marketplace image and all artistic endeavors it was time consuming. Designing and executing single, bi-annual and annual ad campaigns, directing public relation events, interacting with both ad agencies and controlling the company’s own art department along with participating with high ranking clientele and their promotional needs left little time for the “fine” art ambitions that I had always wanted to pursue.
While I would occasionally get involved at home with the more “fine art” side of things, it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I actually picked up the brushes and really started getting back into it. I felt like I “had come home!” I enjoy three main mediums: water color, oil and pastel/charcoal. I officially retired in the third quarter of 2013 and have been able to spend quality time putting my talents to use and have been able to acquire a small studio that allows me to enjoy my retirement to the fullest.
Having served as vice-president and board member of the Lodi Community Art Center and showing at The School Street Gallery in Lodi has been a blessing to me in that I am able to interact with so many talented people from many different walks of artistic and medium expressions. I also enjoy sharing my artistic experiences in teaching art to students of any age.
Subject matter to me isn’t really an issue, just about anything will work: there’s beauty in everything. With that said I suppose that I tend to focus more on old buildings and architecture, still life and nature.

|
Jim Melquist and Vicki Gaia will demonstrate how to create plaster sculptures using ordinary Plaster of Paris and dry earth pigments. There will also be a PowerPoint presentation that will show ideas for different shapes and the use of embedded objects to create interesting surfaces.

|
The introductory classes focuses on the fundamentals of working with cold wax. Cold wax is combined with oil paints creating a unique and versatile medium that does not require a heat source or fusing tools. This amazing medium has great depth and lends itself to representational imagery as well as abstraction.
Emphasis is placed on the understanding of cold wax materials, support, tools and techniques using oil paints, dry pigments, a squeegee, brayer, palette knife, our fingers and other non-traditional tools; working wet-in-wet, wet on dry; and the development of rich textures, lines, marks, oil paint sticks, incising, scraping back, color, and composition. Come to learn, have fun and get messy with this amazing medium!

Two Day Workshop with Bobbie Baldwin
Color Mixing & Theory
For Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, & Pastel
April 6 & 7
9am-4pm
Participants will cover the elements of theory relating to mixing color according to how we see (scientifically) using the color wheel, lighting (and shadow) temperature. Participants will learn how color bounces and influences the subject, define the temperature of the color, paint from still life. We will also discuss the elements of shadow, color compliments, color transitions, and color terms.
$175 for Non-Members/ $157.50 for SAL Members

Space is limited, pre-register to guarantee your spot. Limit 10.
The session is for 3 hours, and models typically start with short quick poses and finish with longer poses. All artists must sign up in advance and be at least 18 years old. The session fee is $15, and artists must bring their own easel, drawing board, and materials.
Etiquette: Once the session begins, the gallery doors will be locked. Late arrivals are welcome, but they will be allowed access only during a break between poses. There is NO PHOTOGRAPHY OF MODELS allowed. Artists are encouraged to tip models and thank them at the end of the session. Conversations and music must be kept at a low level.

AAUW is soliciting original works of art for an art show to be held at Central United Methodist
Church, 3700 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, on Saturday, March 16, 2019. No submission fee required.
Artwork Eligibility: Artwork should present a visual expression of and reaction to issues of female empowerment, including but not limited to activism, education, pay equity, violence against women, sexual harassment, gender stereo-typing, intersectionality, non traditional roles and women’s leadership. Local, national and world perspectives, both historical and current, are all accepted.

This program is funded in part by a grant sponsored by the Stockton Arts Commission.
Instruction will focus on the basics of drawing, including multiple media studies in value, perspective, composition, contour drawing, positive vs. negative space, and color theory. Students must sign up for the entire series, and the classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. There will be a waiting list in case of cancellations. Scholarships are available.
A reception for the students, parents and friends showcasing the students' artwork will be held on November 3rd.
Mission Statement of the Stockton Art League Youth Art Program
To provide low cost, high quality art instruction to the youth of Stockton, and to instill in them an appreciation of the arts as an process in all endeavors, and a discovery of the power of creativity.

Open to the public and SAL members, Basic Concepts of drawing are vital to every visual artistic medium. Mora brings his 39 years of experience as artist, teacher, and judge to the Stockton community at the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery. Students will participate by practicing the basic concepts of contour drawing, sketching, and shading with black and white before going on to colored pencil.

Tuleburg Press is working to build literacy and writing confidence for all ages through book publishing, one-on-one mentoring, community outreach, and writing workshops.
Those activities occur at THE WRITE PLACE, a downtown Stockton creative writing and book arts center. Modeled after 826 Valencia in San Francisco, 916 Ink in Sacramento, and the San Francisco Center for the Book, THE WRITE PLACE teaches writing, bookbinding, and letterpress printing on vintage presses.
We see the center as a walking-distance friendly spot for students enrolled in the many downtown town schools, but it will offer creative writing and book arts workshops for writers of all ages.
Writing groups and book clubs will be able to use the space in the evenings. On weekends THE WRITE PLACE will host author readings and artists who teach paper making, book binding, and paper crafts of many kinds.
