“It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.”

― Vincent Van Gogh
Spring is upon us and we greet a new season in 2021. With the many changes we have experienced over the passed year, we can agree that the arts remain essential.

January was filled with several operational tasks including wrapping up our December virtual art catalog project, preparing virtual workshop videos to distribute to the community, writing new grants for hybrid virtual projects in 2021 (if awarded), and weathering the January storm with an old building. Also among the tasks at the gallery included one step closer to reopening the gallery as we have cleared away unused corners for better access for workshops and visitors.

Please be on the look out for an email in the next week for receiving new work for March, as we did not have a change out for January or February. Whether we have an in-person show in March or virtual catalog, we plan to carry on with new work.

We continue to have much to celebrate and be thankful for. We plan for goodness in this new year. I look forward to seeing you all this year in some form or another.

While COVID restricts our ability to offer each other in-person connection, community is more important than ever. In hopes of offering creative social space for our members, the Stockton Art League will be offering monthly virtual gatherings  for the current season. We hope this will also be a way of attuning the gallery’s vision to the hearts and hopes of the members.

2021 Memberships

Thank you for being a part of our story and helping us throughout last year. In 2020, we met many challenges including COVID-19 and the water damage at the Goodwin Gallery.

It was through the generosity of members and patrons that we were able to continuing to make an impact. Even from afar, the membership was able leave ripples throughout the community.

We overcame these challenges by continuing to spread the joys of making art. Some of our accomplishes included delivering 80 art kits to Mary Graham Children's Shelter to youth in need. We were able to put together a 300+ page virtual art catalog showcasing our community and viewed over 1300 times. We created an Emerging Artists fund with a startup of $1000 to go towards supporting new artists early in their practice. We were also able to launch six arts initiatives through a California Arts Council grant to build relationship with community organizers to support artists and the arts in our region.  We did this by pushing through adversity. We will continue to grow the arts in Stockton and San Joaquin County and we want you with us on our journey.

2021 marks 85 years as an organization and 20 years at the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery. We look forward to, and appreciate, your continued support of the Stockton Art League.

GAY LYNN SAUNDERS

Creating Hope & Healing | A Showing of Visual and Wearable Art by Gay Lynn Saunders

“The long months of the pandemic have been so stressful for everyone. I feel it is important to help build resistance to illness, both physical and mental, to keep oneself in a state of elevated emotion. The same feelings are also evoked when being in or viewing nature or elements of nature. So for me, this body of work has been a journey of healing that I wish to share.”

A virtual tour of Gay Lynn’s work & the gallery will be available in our Online Store. Visit
