As I send this around 1:30am Feb 1, It is still taking moments to adjust but wanted to keep you all informed that the Stockton Art League - Elsie May Goodwin Gallery was vandalized and property damaged at 10:15pm on January 31. We wish to inform our members directly with this update so you don’t find out through misinformation or in the moment when visiting the gallery.
There is not much to share besides the following:
1.) When facing the gallery, the right window was broken using the MMID trash can. This was seen by Jessica, SAL Director, at 10:15pm on the security monitors at the moment it was happening. We have clear video footage of the incident.
2.) Miracle Mile Security and Stockton PD were called immediately. Jessica, Elazar (Board President), and member Joel Blum arrived first to the gallery. Several other members of the community called SPD as well including Delta Awards employee Justin, who works up the Mile.
We are working with Stockton Police and Miracle Mile security as this progresses.
3.) The gallery was closed when this damaged occurred. From the video footage, it seems the suspect became erratic or angry and threw the trash can smashing the window then proceeded to leave northbound on the Mile. Motive or reason for smashed the window is unknown.
4.) No items were taken from the gallery. There are some artworks that were damaged such as books and cards. More details will be released and the artists will be notified.
5.) Elazar Abraham, Board President, Joel Blum, SAL member, and myself cleaned the debris and garbage followed by temporarily securing the window with heavy duty cardboard. Hammerhead Security officers also helped with cleaning glass and debris. The first round of clean-up was completed at 12:15.
5.) The window was temporarily boarded until we can contact a company or go to Home Depot when they open.
6.) As of now, all activities will presume on schedule and as normal. But I will contact everyone if something changes.
7. We will update you if more information comes to light and ways that volunteers can help.
